SHTC . . . and some questions . . .

MajesticRose Apr 03, 2005 04:26 PM

So I aqcuired this new gecko yesterday at an Expo. I saw her and she was such a good price I couldn't pass her up. She's about 44 grams (the breeder I got her from weighed her) and both of her parents were Baldies, even though she doesn't show it. What do you all think??? I'm really excited with her . . . I would have picked up a male but all of the geckos the breeder had with him were females.

What do you all think???

Shes beautiful!

although, i dont want to burst your bubble...shes probbaly just classifed as a Tang. they need to have less than 10 (correct me if i'm wrong???) body spots to be hypo, so shes an almost-hypo and definatley not a super hypo. her carrot tail factor could also be debated...i have head anywhere from 10-15% has to be orange to be a full carrot tail. you might want to get a few more opinions...maybe on the "other site".
but she still has great genitic potential!

She looks great, glad you are happy with her.

Like the other poster, I don't want to be a stick in the mud, but I don't think she's hypo or carrot tail.

She could be het for hypo. To be considered carrot tail she should at least have 10% of carrot on her tail without any black spots in it.

As long as you like her it doesn't matter though but be careful next time you go leopard shopping and you're looking for something specific. Some breeders will try and sell anything as hypo this, carrot tail that, when all they have is a normal yellow.

I did get her from a reputable breeder in my area, who doesn't just post names on his reptiles. A lot pics I've seen of Carrot Tails have had some spotting. A good 15%-20% of her tail is orange colored. While I do agree at this point that she isn't Hypo, she's probably considered a reduced pattern. While she doesn't have more than 10 or so real dark spots she does have some lighter ones, I think that pattern is considered ghost . .. however since she isn't ALL "ghost" spots, I think reduced better describes her pattern.

This pics on this site http://www.freewebs.com/stinauiuc/morphdescriptions.htm show carrottails with spotting on their tails.

If you have a look at that picture of the the carrot tail, the carroting isn't broken up by black spots in the first 10-15%.

The orange has to be solid without breaks in it. Have a look at the picture above of the baldy, that is a good picture of a carrot tail. You can also look at pictures at some of the bigger breeders online to see good examples of carrot tails.

yeah, thats just a nice tangerine

a carrot tail has to have 10-20% carrotting at the base with no spots breaking it up, and a hypo has to have less than 10 body spots, a super hypo has none

here is a picrture of my super hypo tangerine carrot tail
