Cheap temp moniter?

animalfarie15 Apr 03, 2005 04:41 PM

I have read some where I do not remember where (maybe Under the Leaves) that you should invest in a digital temp alert thermometer and humidity gauge. Is this true? I would be more than accepting to buy one if needed. Do any of you guys have one of these? Are they needed?

Thanks
Hannah

As long as you keep them at normal room temperature, an alert thermometer isn't really necessary. You will need a couple of regular thermometers, though. One for the "cool" end of the enclosure and one for each basking spot. I just check the temp a couple of times a day when I mist the enclosure. You will also need a humidity gauge.
At night, unless your house is unusually cool, temperatures in the mid 60's will be fine. Anoles can actually tolerate temperatures in the 40's for brief periods of time.

Thanks did not know that.So during the night no light or anything is needed. Sorry new to the Anole world. Are the Bahaman Anoles the same care as the green?

They need their sleep! The easiest thing to do is to buy a timer and plug a power strip into it with your lights, etc. That way, the lights will come on and go off at the same time each day (erratic lighting can be stressful to them). About 12-14 hours of light a day is good. You don't need the fancy bulbs either. Also, NO heat rocks or under tank heaters.
Bahamian Anoles can be cared for the same as Green Anoles. Just make sure that the nighttime temps don't drop below 65 for them. Green Anoles are comfortable with lower nighttime temps since most of their natural range is in temperate rather than semi-tropical climates.

Fluker's makes a very good digital thermometer/hygrometer that costs about $18 bucks. What I really like about it is that it tells you what the max and min levels were. For about $13 you can get their analog pair which works fairly well.
