Are Hognose snakes rear-fanged venomous?

Matt...Hennek Apr 03, 2005 05:31 PM

I just heard someone say that they are. I'm assuming that even if they are, the venom isn't very powerful.

Just curious.

Yes, hognoses are venomous. Do a kingsnake.com search on "hognose" and "venom" and you'll find many meaningful discussions.

Hognoses are venomous. Their system for venom delivery is very different than pit vipers, though. Look for articles dealing with colubrids possessing the Duvernoy gland. Studies on hognose venom suggests that protolipase enzymes help in digestion of foods consumed by hognoses, and some also believe in immobilizing their prey. So, while bites are somewhat rare, they do happen. Most bites are feeding-response bites, so watch your fingers. When biting hognoses act like little bulldogs, and don't easily let go--whether its a mouse or you. For the most part, hognoses are very reluctant to bite, and should be considered safe snakes to keep. In a previous thread on " I got two free snakes" or something, I disagree with states who place hognoses on venomous lists along side pit vipers. Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.
