Wide banded vs. thin banded

serpentdan Apr 03, 2005 06:19 PM

Generally, when it comes to the grayband market, Blair's morphs are more sought after than alterna morphs. Yet, Leonis morphs tend to be more popular than milksnake morphs. Why do you suppose this is? DV

I would say the majority of people love the high contrast reds and oranges to a high degree in the Blair's phase alterna. More striking at first glance. Unless you are a true Gray Band enthusiast, the alterna morph I would expect seems rather bland in comparison.

In thayeri my guess is that milksnake phase specimens to most folks are not as exciting as leonis for the simple fact that they look like triangulum, and most of those are quite similar. Leonis phase thayeri are exciting because they are different, have lots of color and contrast.

RussBates Apr 03, 2005 07:27 PM

Dan,
Love your thayeri man, they are awesome.

I really prefer alterna with crisp silver and thin black saddles with a wedge of super brilliant orange in the middle...maybe I'm the exception. I like the Raiders look I have a theyeri that looks very similar.

As for thayeri, the milksnake phase leaves a bit to be desired when compared to the leonis morph. Maybe it's the colors, the thin saddles...........maybe it's that a MSP looks like any other triangulum (almost) and the leonis morph really stands out. I've seen morphs of both that I really liked but I've always stuck w/ leonis myself. I did however produce one lone MSP morph out my colony of leonis this past summer.

Thank you Russ for the compliments and your thoughts on Milksnake phase vs. Leonis. DV

jlassiter Apr 03, 2005 09:51 PM

I personally like the alterna phase over the blairs phase in alterna.
As for leonis vs. milksnake phase I am with most people that like leonis over milksnake phase. My reasoning behind this is that the variability (the reason we all love thayeri) is shown more in the leonis phase. There are more pattern/color variations in leonis phase specimens. A milksnake phase pattern is pretty much the same on all milksnake phase specimens.

I guess I'm one of the few that really like the milksnake phase just as much if not more than the leonis. BTW I just discovered this forum. I'd really like to learn how to post pics and use this forum

Email me if you need anymore help. I would love to see your pics.

vichris Apr 03, 2005 11:08 PM

I've got 4 milksnake phase Thayeri. One hot male I got from David Weymouth one molten female I got from him too and 2 others that I held back from a from a pair that I had for several years. I've also have six leonis one from David Weymouth one from Chris Bodner one male from serpantdan and three holdbacks from my own. I also have some highwhite cal kings some river rd graybands some pyros and a sinaloan. I won't be breeding my thayeri until next year.

jlassiter Apr 03, 2005 11:29 PM

Sounds like quite the collection.....Get some pics up....I would love to see them. I know everyone else would too......
I have an adult male from David Weymouth too. The male was produced by Evan Stahl. It is the father to my Keyholed female that looks somewhat like the one you say you got from Dan Vermilya. Too bad to hear about his business closure.

Is that one from the Bodners?? Or David Weymouth's??
I like the clean background color and grey face....Very nice again,
John Lassiter

vichris Apr 04, 2005 12:05 AM

These are some I produced from a pair I bought when I lived in AZ. The Female was from a guy out of Flagstaff named Rich Gassaway. My male was from a line from Kim's Colubrids.

jlassiter Apr 04, 2005 12:14 AM

Interesting you bring up Kim's Colubrids.
I got 2.4 of her breeding stock when she closed her business.
1.2 of these were from Tim at Vivid.
Most of next year's adults come from the Vivid line I got from Kim.
Nice snakes....

Ya she had some really nice thayeri. I bought that male I mentioned from Thom Slack from the now defunct "Know Slack Reptiles". He bought most of his thayeri from Kim.

If you go to David Weymouths site you can see pics of 3 thayeri I bought from him. LMT2003A06,2003B06,& 2003B13. A06 is a male the other 2 are females. I'll try and get some pics taken of all of my stuff here soon.

jlassiter Apr 04, 2005 12:26 AM

I will check out his site again....I hear it is back up as of yesterday.....LOL
I remember him sending me pics of all his 2003 babies as they hatched. I responded with all my pics of my 2003 offspring. I am sure I have seen your 3 from David...
I did not know Slack was out of business. I have not heard that name in a couple years. I probably have the parents to his snakes....Or they could be the ones I sold.....LOL

David W. is a great guy. To bad he's getting out. I've had pretty good luck with most everyone I've dealt with..... except one. I really liked dealing Chris Bodner and Tim Gebhard. Dan Vermilya was also good to deal with.

vichris Apr 04, 2005 12:01 AM

Milksnake phase female

jlassiter Apr 04, 2005 12:03 AM

vichris Apr 04, 2005 12:07 AM

I would guess Dan Vermilya!???

jlassiter Apr 04, 2005 12:18 AM

Actually I was asking where you got that one from you posted above me, but I can see how it came out wrong....LOL
I produced this little female from the adult Evan Stahl male I got from David Weymouth. The female adult was a wild type I got from Sunbaked Serpents. The mother passed last year for some mysterious reason.
Here is the Evan Stahl male....

vichris Apr 04, 2005 12:27 AM

LOL........... Both of those are really nice. All three of those pics I posted I produced from the pair I previously mentioned.
I have a male I bought from serpantdan that looks almost identical to that 1st pic you posted. He's got slightly more yellow in him though. He should be ready to breed next year too.

vichris Apr 04, 2005 12:59 AM

Ya I saw this one on mountainkings site. He still has it list under "holdback sale". Nice looking male.

vichris Apr 04, 2005 12:08 AM

John Lassiter

vichris Apr 04, 2005 12:51 AM

It's Chris. I have a herp buddy named Vic. I got him into thayeri too.

That is a great looking bunch of neonates. I have a pic like it too. I need to take some updated photos. When I do I'll post them.

vichris Apr 03, 2005 10:36 PM

I just discovered this forum. I guess I'm one of the few who like the milksnake phase of thayeri at least as much if not better than the leonis. I'll post some pics when I figure out how to use this forum.

So you are the one who got the "SHARK TOOTH" Thayeri from David........
Very nice....almost got it myself.....LOL
John Lassiter

vichris Apr 04, 2005 09:05 PM

Ya the minute I saw the "Shark Tooth" I got bit. LOL. Can you believe the amount of red on his head!!!! Thanks John

jlassiter Apr 04, 2005 09:29 PM

In my opinion the "shark tooth" milksnake phase is my favorite one out of all your pics.
I do like the Leonis phase you got from Chris as well.
I take it the orange milksnake phase is from David Weymouth as well, eh?

vichris Apr 04, 2005 11:33 PM

She is from his b03 group. Is this the one you are refering to.

jlassiter Apr 04, 2005 11:35 PM

.

jlassiter Apr 04, 2005 11:31 PM

Damn...I love the red on the head of this one...I sure wish I would have gotten it when he sent a pic of it right out of the egg.
I like the variation of head patterns Thayeri had.
Here is a female I sold in 2003 that had a nice looking "skull" pattern on her head, not to mention a busy pattern and splitbands......
John Lassiter

vichris Apr 04, 2005 11:35 PM

I love the saddles on that one.

pikiemikie Apr 04, 2005 10:32 PM

I like that reason number one ms phase thayeri. And the shark tooth is one of a kind......great snakes........chris bodner

vichris Apr 04, 2005 11:39 PM

I'm still heart broken though over that MSP My partner bought from you that got away. I'd really like to get a replacement from you for that one. Do you have a lost snake guarantee? LOL

jlassiter Apr 04, 2005 11:43 PM

....the two males I got from the Bodners have escaped a couple times each now. Good thing my snake room is snake proof....LOL
I think they breed em sneaky up there in Philly....LOL
John Lassiter

vichris Apr 05, 2005 10:58 AM
