Lots of heating questions.....

Savvgawd Apr 03, 2005 09:13 PM

Ok well I've been emailing company's left and right, going through forums and what not, and still can't seem to find simple understandable answers or answers at all. Maybe it's just me, but I keep getting confused. Ok first question has to do with Thermostats. I'm trying to get my cages/heating more organized so I was thinking of buying a few Helix 1000's to control the temps without using a temp gun every hour. Can I program the helix or any thermostat to simulate night time drops or can it only stay at one constant temp, is that ok?Basically would I just plug my heat source into the thermostat, put a probe over the heat source, and the Thermostat will regulate the amount of wattage used therefor regulating the tempatures? Can I use adaptors or plug several different heat sources into one thermostat? Any more on t-stats would help.
Second question: I have 4 T25(72"x30"x18" AP cages that I would like to convert to belly heat so that I can use a T-stat on them, also so I can stack them. I like the RHP option but it's expensive. Would it be easy to convert these cages using flexwatt? Would I install the felxwatt directly inside the cage, if so what would I cover it with?
Sorry for all the simple questions, I just want to do everything right the first time, don't want to ruin my cages either. Thanks so much for your time and any replies!!

For controlling Flexwatt or other belly heater with a Helix or other proportional controller:

1. Plug heater into controller.

2. Affix probe onto heated area or where you want the temperature controlled.

** Make sure the probe can't fall off **

3. Plug in controller and set the temp.

I don't know what animals you are keeping, but those cages you have are big. If the room is cold and you are keeping tropical animals, belly heat may not be enough during Winter.

Also, you would be wise NOT to put Flexwatt inside the cage, or at least on the cage floor inside the cage. Better to go under the cage bottom. If AP cages do not have a recess for undercage heaters, then use something to prop the cages up so you can put the heater underneath. Wood strips work well, as do plastic strips cut from a store-bought For Sale sign or whatever. For Flexwatt, you only need 1/16" space between cages.
