Sterilization?

AlteredMind99 Apr 03, 2005 11:32 PM

I recently lost two baby leo's to parasites, i am now getting ready to disinfect their cages for eventual re-use. I was planning on filling them with bleach and water and leaving them to sit over night, then dumping them, putting about an inch of bleach water in the bottom and scrubbing them out. Then leavcing them out to dry.

Anything else that needs to be done or should this kill any left over parasiteS?

I wouldn't use bleach. It can be absorbed into the silicone around the tank. This then means it will leach back into the tank over time. So no bleach especially if you are going to fill it with water animals at some point. I would say use vinegar then thouroughly rinse it, but i heard vinegar is bad for lizards. You could try pouring boiling water into the tank

I'm addicted to "Wipe Out" -- they have a great gel/hand/tank cleanser and a great liquid cleanser that'S perfect for Leos. I belive its availlable in most pet stores and online.

I use separate feeding tanks so when they get over-coated in the prey calcium dust, I use "Wipe Out" all over the feed tanks and rinse them in very hot H2O in my bathtub.

I also use "Wipe Out" and my own lotion/anti-bac soap between haandling my crew.

Highly reccomended stuff! And I've had a ton of rescues/sicklings in my Leo time period!

We use Quatricide at work to sterilize things. But a 10% bleach solution should do it too. We've used that a few times when we've had mites on one or two of our other guys to sterilize their cages. I really haven't seen Quat anywhere for sale tho outside of Herp shows.

Just make sure if you do do the bleach wash you rinse really well. When we use bleach on anything we soak it for 24 hours in dechlorinated water to remove any trace of the bleach.
