CHUCKWALAWALAWALA!!!!!!!!!!!

herpsaremylife Apr 03, 2005 11:36 PM

YESSSSSSSSS! IVE GOT NOT MY FIRST BUT ALSO MY SECOND CHUCKWALLA! i went to PalmDale to my Grandmas sisters house, yeah. at the end of her street there is a bunch of sandstone rocks, huge, you guys know... well, i went down with my lil bro and started to hike around. after the second peak of rocks i started feeling low blood sugar(diabetes) so i ate something and found a destination point to stop, sit at, then hike back home. well, we went to the rock and i sat down, and i hear this sand paper noise. well, i was pretty sure i knew what that was. i jumped off the rock and looked into the crag in it and there was this large black face lookin at me! i screamed chuckwalla, them saw the second ones tail stickin out. heck yes. well, it took a whole hour to get both out but me and my brother did it. the big guy came out by the poke em in the nose technique he backed right out into my hand. an adult male redback chuck. the baby came halfway by poking, the other half came out by getting it to chomp onto a creosote stick and pulling him out due to the width of the crack and it? not being able to fully wedge itself.

just be patient with him and don't mess with him alot. Try to cover the back and 2 sides of the tank to give him a more secure feeling. I would try to make a cage about 5 x 2 1/2 feet by maybe 24" tall. Only make the front glass. The back and sides of wood and the top of hardware cloth. Hinge the top to have access to the cage. It is pretty easy if you are at all handy. I think that would be your best bet. Tom

they are probably a pair. I don't think that big male would tolerate another male that close. Also at that size the color looks like a female. Tom

Tom-gave you the good advice, but one caveot is I would go to home depot and buy the vinyl coated wire because of the size of these chucks 1/2" wire would hold them fine, but I like the vinyl coat not so hard on the nose. If your having him outside, be careful of a glass front because the temps could get vary high so make sure the cage has a good cool side in the shade, if it's insdie then no problem. Let us know if you need anymore info on lighting etc.

It's always a blast to catch a chuck. I was on vacation in Baja the week before last and at least for me, the chuck we caught was one of the highlights of the trip.

Are you keeping the little guys?

No, the big guy is probably pretty old. Chucks this age can be difficult to acclimate. I misread your first post and thought you'd caught a total of three. The juvie looks to be about Gracie's size. If you intend on keeping the big guy, I'd recommend getting a larger tank ASAP especially since it's got to house two. I think 60 gallons is the recommended minimum for one. Also, the juvie should be sexable so check for pores and make sure you don't have two boys

I would try my best if I were you to find another small one...release that big guy. They can be a pain in the butt to acclimate as was said. The small ones are a bit more understanding :O) An adult male chuck into a glass tank is not the way to go. YOu really need to consider building yourself a nice large outdoor pen...They are really easy to construct, and you cal really appreciate their habits more when they are kept outside. There are a few people that have built outdoor pens, including myself that would be glad to help you out with ideas.
