Large lizard with red head & dark gray body?

sugarfox03 Apr 04, 2005 10:04 AM

Can anyone tell me what kind of lizard has a large red head and a dark, like slate gray body? No spikes, kind of fat body...made a weird hissing/growling noise when approached. 2.5-3 feet long, not sure if that was full grown though. This animal was seen in the wild in south FL and I cannot figure out what it is! It was probably someone's pet at one time, as I have never seen one before and I am very familiar with FL native wildlife. I looked up cuban iguanas, green iguanas, red tegu's, red ackies...it was none of those! Any help you all can provide would be great! Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a male Eumeces laticeps (Broadhead skink)

Possibly a red-headed Agama (Agama agama). They are breeding in South Florida. Although, the size you give is off for this species.
