My male Kimberly Rock Monitor after eating 2 Rat Pups !

CVReptiles Apr 04, 2005 10:34 AM

Here is my awesome male after eating 2 Rat Pups Yesterday ! After he was done, he went on his hollow log and basked for hours. He is the biggest Kimberly Rock Monitor I have ever seen. His pattern is also stunning. The kimmies I have seen have way smaller occeli.

you might want to let up on the mice that poor guy still looks a bit overweight.

CVReptiles Apr 04, 2005 02:21 PM

He is not overweight and is always very active and energetic.
Here is a pic of him when he does not have a full belly.

he looks a little chubby for my tastes but hey whatever makes ya happy i would let him out a bit more and let him have free roam of the house for an hour a day though .

ok man whatever you say .................i dont want to start anything, but if youd care about your monitor youd snap out of this denial ......just my 2 cents ..... kims are not suppose to be so robust......take a look at others kims or better yet do a google search you might be surprised...

crazyassnilemoni Apr 04, 2005 08:05 PM

he dosnt look over wt if he is very very little and a freeroming rock its not very smart at all infack thats pretty dumb to me i dont care how tame there r there very very fast monitors. ud have a hell of a time trying to get it back lol. and if u look at the 2nd pic overwt means they will have hot dog like fat arms in the pics they look more muculer to me. and let of on mice? what rats have more fat then mice. if u think he is overwt feed him mice and some small quail it will help alot. quail and a little less than norml he will be fine in a few short weeks lol. well thats my 2 cents i hope i helped peace.

varanio Apr 05, 2005 09:09 AM

actually you dont help at all. Feeding it quail and rats and mice is ok on occasion, but this can not be an everyday occurance. If you talk to EXPERIENCED Glauerti keepers they will tell you that their diet mainly consists of insects. These animals were not designed to be fat like in BOTH of those pictures. They are designed to be sleek and agile so they can elude predators......oz is a land full of predators and a fat Glauerti would be gobbeled up in a second........

so actually your advice only makes the situation worse.

CVReptiles Apr 05, 2005 06:53 PM

I'm not trying to cause an arguement here but maybe you should try and look at the second picture again ? He is not overweight. His stomach gets the size he had in the first picture after he eats his meal. If you look at the secound picture carefully, you will see he is not as fat as in the first photo. And by the way, I dont know what Kimberly Rock Monitor breeders you have spoken to...but Kimberlys almost ALWAYS dislike insects. In Australia, they mainly prey unpon small lizards and rodents.

I think that you need to re-check your sources then. I have not heard of one who feeds only mice. I have 1.1 Glauerti, they are feed a majority of crickets and roaches. They each get a fuzzy once a week. The only time either receives more than one fuzzy is the female, when she is cycling. You can go on and feed him a rodent only diet, that is your choice.

CVReptiles Apr 05, 2005 08:24 PM

I do try to stay off an all rodent diet with my reptiles but unfortunatly my kimmie will only eat lizards or mice. I have tried crickets with him before but he hates them. What kind of roaches do you feed your kimmmies ?

You need to watch with the lizards. Hopefully you are not feeding WC animals to him. I rotate between crickets and lobster roaches. I have found that mine do better when I rotate feedings, of course that is probably just me. When I feed crickets alone for a solid period they tend to eat less. I offer crickets one day and roaches the next, with a fuzzy on Saturdays.

varanio Apr 05, 2005 10:20 PM

hey cesar thats pretty funny that you ask about my sources and what not and how kims totally dislike any insects yet you come off and ask about what kind of roaches mr addison is feeding his? thats funny man real funny .........well i was more concerned about the monitor in hand, but at least youre asking questions about yours and why it doesnt eat insects......so youre taking a step in the right direction congrats.....animals that are overweight tend to die at a faster rate than a healthy animal same can be said about humans.......keep that in mind

hmm, i'm pretty sure we've had this discussion before. I'm almost positive that you've posted those pics before. I'm just glad my sav eats anything you put in there. He'll chow down some fuzzies, crickets, roaches, beach balls, small kittens. lol.. I just don't see many sav's on the forums I guess. Good luck with your guy. if you could get a snap of him walking. I'd like to see his movements. From his size, not saying he's way too fat or anything, but it looks like with his legs it'd be a pretty big hassel to stay on his feet long.

Here is another pic of him. This is the next day after he has had a meal. Alex.....you aren't understanding that he is not OVERWEIGHT. He simply looks plumpy after he has eaten. If you still think he looks overweight after seeing this picture.....I don't know what else to tell you. By the way, I said Kimberly's *ALMOST* always dislike insects....I did not say they WONT eat them.
