Feeding...need help

Rydair Apr 04, 2005 12:38 PM

Im planning on buying a bag of 100 hopper mice from redentpro.com. My savanna has been eating mice now for about a month. She is my first monitor and unfortunatly i have not given her the best of care only because i am inexperianced but i keep learning and work with her every day to get her on the right track. As a result she is a year old and just pushing 11 inches long. not very big. So lately ive been playing with her diet and was wondering if it would be allright to feed her only mice at this point or is it a nessesity to give her insects as well. I also trow in a minnow or two every once in a while to mix it up, she likes them. So at this point would it be sutible to feed her two hoppers a day or is that two little or not varied enough? Let me know what you think, keep in mind though that im doing my best so dont kill me for being inexperianced.

ok first i would start with not giving him minows if you ever seen a turtle eat gold fish or minows notice how they only eat the belly that because the rest of the fish is bone, but some eat all of it,, that is why some peoples camin and gators are a little thin,,because of the fish diet,,, but it is not bad for them to eat miniows just to me ,it is not for a savana monitor,,to me minows are for more the peach throat or a water monitor but,,,,, your monitor looks good and healthy i would only stick with zoo med monitor diet, mice or hoppers, hiss'in roachs and maby so scramble eggs ever great once in a while i have raised them off this diet for years and they do just fine
good luck

How much should i feed her? I was planning on 2 hoppers give or take, with some crickets...like 10 or under? Does that sound allright? I know each monitor is different but i was looking for an estimate to play with.

Mice are fine as a staple. I would stay away from the canned monitor food. whole prey items are best by far. learning to gauge how much too feed can be tricky, you will just have to watch closely and see.

ur sav looks good mine is about the same size and i just gave him a hopper for the first time . he loved it but i would say start with 1 hopper for a little bit longer then work up from there but definitely keep giving her invertibrates they always love them and is a good source for minerals and dust them also .

I give u luck for u and your monitor. peace oh and ill get a pic of her soon kk

Well, seeing that how old she is and that tiny. It'd be hard to determine an average feeding cycle. I would def stay away from canned food because mice/crickets are an excellent diet for my sav. He's growing rapidly everyday. I would stay away from canned food because it just takes away their preditorial skills, and it sometimes makes them blow up. Having live prey is the best because they can run around for them, which is good exercise. I feed my sav 5 pinkies, about 120 crickets, and a few mealworms. He'll eat way more than that, but I don't want him to float like a freakin blow up fish when he's in his tub. I haven't seen any good signs from anything else than that. I give him an OCCASIONAL piece of meat, like ham or something. But that's about 1 time a month, as a treat.

Well, i blabbered, sorry. Pretty much you're going to have to decide what's best for your monitor, and how much she'll devour. There's charts all over the internet that have the nutritional value of edible things, just search for that and take a gander. heh, i'm done. good luck with her, post some pics cause I don't see that many sav's around here. heh cya
