new here 8 foot python

bloodroses19 Apr 04, 2005 02:42 PM

we just rescued an 8 foot burmese python. never had a large snake before. she looks in perfect health. but the tank she was left with is way too small so we are going to build an enclosure for her. how large should this be? i have read that they dont really need that much room but i would like to spoil her a little. is there a reason they should not have very large enclosure. im having some problems with my research because every site i go to tells me something different so i figured i would ask here if you could direct me to some websites that heve the "correct" information. thanks for any help.

a whole room if possible, but if you cant do that the minimum for a decent sized burm is 6'x3'x2'. id say go to 8' though.

You should make it as large as possible. Whoever says otherwise is misinformed. Some will argue that with hatchlings, a small enclosure should be used so they can feel 'secure'. I happen to disagree even with that as long as there are a couple of small hides in the enclosure (for a hatchling that is). But in this case since its an 8footer, go the largest you can. Hope this helps.

Normally, the rule of thumb is, Length width= total length of snake. That is at the minimum. I would go larger to give it room to grow. Being 8ft now before too long it will be 10-12 so you dont want to have to build a whole new enclosure within the next year. If you really wanted to go all out for her a whole room (modified) would be best. But just as a roomy enclosure, probably a 10*4*2 would be great. That is just my opinion.
