Two of My Habitats

cherribomb Apr 04, 2005 09:06 PM

Here are two of my tanks. The larger one has 3 babies in it. The 10 gallon just has one Leo in it.

Let me know if the link is incorrect: I'm new to this

All are fed in separate plastic feeding tanks

Hey there!
I like your enclosures . . they are really nice. I am not sure how big your leos are, but if they are still under 6-7 inches, I would recommend sticking them on paper towels temporarily until they get closer to adult size. If they decide to eat some of the sand, they could get impacted . . however it is a good thing you feed in a separate container to minimize ingestion. Otherwise they look like they have very nice homes!
Take Care,
Nicole

I would watch your temps on the tank next to the window. It can heat up in there VERY quickly if the sun happens to hit it.

cherribomb Apr 05, 2005 01:04 AM

Hey All,

The window never gets any direct sunlight and gets minimal sunlight at all. However I actually highly recommend this setup because it is great for regulating 12hour sleep/wake cycles as I use red lights for overhead heat (they can't see red). As soon as it gets dark outside, they all wake up and run about because they think they're in the dark! (even tho I can still observe them ) This way, they are guaranteed less stress by receiving the necessary light cycling.

Also, there are 2 thermometers on the cool and warm sides of all tanks.

As I noted, the substrate is NOT calci-sand. Its much chunkier substrate and its softer than sand. They're also fed in isolated feed tanks so I've never had issues with ingestion. The only ingestables in the tank are vitamins in raised containers -- calcium sprinkled with those Leo freeze dried flies coated in vitamins. Believe it or not, they do use the supplements!

A little bit of sun is just as harmful as direct sun. If you've ever had a fish tank, you would see that. Direct sun may be extremely harmful, however, any sun through any window creates heat.

That substrate lookes like stuff that is actually made by Zoo Med I believe . . the company that makes Desert Blend. I don't remember Calci-Sand coming in a purple color. It's just as bad as Calci-sand AND it's known for dying critters colors. Actually, the first time it was put on the market, it was recalled because of that.

Even if your critters aren't eating in their habitats, they can still ingest it. Don't forget that lizards use their tongues to check surroundings. Mine are constantly licking at everything, including their substrate. Every breeder I've talked to, including people here, for the most part use paper towels or repti-carpet. Better to be safe than sorry.

yeah, there is purple calci-sand, and green and black and orange and white and even blue i think...

either way, its all awful stuff. So is desert blend and vita-sand (although I THINK vita-sand isn't AS bad because the particles are very small. but it creates a TON of dust)

Not that this is overly relevent . . . don't forget the Glow in the Dark stuff they sell too. I'll never get some things . . . Glow in the Dark sand . . . go figure.

Vita Sand I think is kind of like Repti-Sand I believe. Last I heard tho it was worse than using Calci-Sand. I was always told (and no, I don't use sand for my guys) that Calci-Sand was better because it was safe when ingested. I have since learned better, but in either case, I wouldn't trust any sand or sand-type bedding.

Like I stated as soon as I move my guys will be on Paper towels all the time.

Hmm...looks just like purple calci-sand to me also. Bigger chunks and softer than sand you say? Sounds like an interesting substrate, what is the "trade" name of it?

Cool set ups

My, my, my...we are a fiesty group!

I recently moved to the Bay Area from Los Angeles so I'm not sure if this is availlable here but:

This bedding is based on 100% plant based materials (NOT coconut, bark, etc.) and is a passable component for carnivorous reptiles. It contains a bacteriostatic agent to help reduce germs and bacterial growth too. It holds more humidity than reptile carpet, similar to paper towels, but not enough to harm or cause respiratory infections. Its also easier to clean than reptile carpet (poop scoops). Never had any problems with impaction in my career with this hobby.

While Leos are supposed to be carnivorous by nature, many of my captive breds eat fruits & veggies occasionally and also LOVE fruit flavored baby food. Their diet is 99% live prey (assorted) but I discovered that they eat roughage occasionally when I found one munching on some veg left to catch a couple loose crickets. If they like this stuff then it can't hurt -- the water content is probably beneficial. If they can eat this stuff then there is no reason the substrate, if ingested (unlikely, as I feed in separate areas) shouldn't also be ingested.

This substrate also comes recommended by my vet. If anyone is in the Bay Area, Dr. Nakamura is an AMAZING Herp vet! I found him through 2 complete strangers' recommendations when I moved here. Check out this very cool rescue story about him saving "The Professor", a bearded dragon!

Cheers,
