Help! My tiger sal just threw up!

persephonie Apr 04, 2005 09:22 PM

I'm freaking out. My tiger sal has been acting a little different lately. He's been trying to climb the walls of the tank a lot and didn't eat today when i fed him. He has been eating a few worms this past week. I took him out and put him in his little play area, he made a little noise and opened his mouth up really wide and out comes a worm. I was already making plans for a vet trip this week because i was worried. Now i'm extra worried i feel sad. What should i do in the meantime?

I don't consider myself an expert on tiger sals but I've kept them for about 10 years. From my experience they do occasionally regurgitate worms. Generally my experience has been that they will do this because the worms were too big. As soon as I cut the worms in half and/or switch to a different food item for a while this stops. So maybe try a pinkie, moth, caterpillar, cricket, or other food item. Also don't be afraid to fast them for a week or so. I've also noted that large sals can go a good couple of weeks to a month without food, especially if they have been feeding on large nightcrawlers or pinkies. If those are the only two things of concern at this point, I wouldn't freak out. Hope you have a good vet in your area. I just located a good herp vet in my area and hope to take my salamander "Beefcake" to get a growth removed from her tail.

Best of luck,

Aaron
