Is this normal for stars?

J-Cal Apr 05, 2005 07:55 AM

I've got a few mainland indian stars that are just over a year old. I measured them on feb 13 and remeasured them this morning. my "male" grew 2 mm. the 2 "females" exhibited no noticable growth. they eat a diet of grass hay mixed with grocery store greens everyday, with mazuri replacing this once a week. I soak them 3-4 times per week and otherwise seem to be in tiptop shape. I dont calcium dust because they dont eat if I do. Instead, I have been offering cuttle bone once a week or so, and they attack the things...kind of weird imo, but i digress. I've heard that stars grow slowly, but is this rate to be expected. as a sidenote, I've had suspicions that perhaps the person I bought these from might not be reputable and the ages might be incorrect. they range in size from 1.75" to 2.25". Supposedly they were temp sexed, and they exhibit the shell doming dimorphism that I've read on a few websites.

This is normal for any tortoise. There are always going to be individual rates for whatever reason.

Generally, Stars do seem to grow slower than most other tortoises but there are exceptions.
