HELP NOW PLEASE! Can IV fluids be homemade??

reamk924 Apr 05, 2005 02:38 PM

I have called around to several pharmacies and medical stores. Noone wants to sell me any IV fluids. The nearest reptile vet is 2 hours away and they won't take me unless I have an appointment. Can an IV solution be homemade?

Maybe if one were a chemist with the proper knowledge, materials, and facilities to insure sterility. Other than that, no.
Try contacting a regular vet locally and explain the situation. I'm sure you can find someone capable of doing a "simple" fluid injection that will also show you how and supply the materials to do it. I took a prior animal into an emergency care vet clinic, which does not have anyone on hand that handles reptiles, but they were able to do an injection upon specific request. I neglected to "learn" how to do it at that time, myself, and also acquire materials, but I'm sure it would have been possible (and better).

as the first poster said, you should be able to get someone to do a sub-cutaneous injection of lactated ringer's solution into a lizard....I'm lucky enough to work for a vet who sees herps, but when my uro needed a boost I just took home 12cc of the LRS and some 25 gauge needles and did the injections into the loose skin of her armpits of 5-6 cc into each side. see if you can get a vet to do this for you if you aren't able to do it yourself.
