"Scribbles" is Home!!! (Pictures)

Lyn Apr 05, 2005 10:11 PM

My birthday isn't until Thursday but my mother-in-law was on the ball and got my card/money out early. I had actually stopped at the store to pick up crickets, fish food, and a pinkie mouse on my way home from work (not knowing the card had arrived today). I held Scribbles for a while and then left thinking I wouldn't get him till Saturday. On the way home I made a wish that when I got home the card would be there and she would have sent money instead of a gift certificate somewhere. I got home and checked the mail and OMG there it was!!! Got back in the car and headed right back to the store to pick him up. I took some photos before putting him in his new home. Good thing, cuz he found one of his hiding spot (the buried 1/2 dog crate) in less than a minute and he hasn't come out since. Poor guy. I feel so bad that he's stressed. I've read on here that he might not acclimate for months. I won't relax until he eats. Hope he eats in the next few days. Here are a couple of the pics I took today. I'll take more once he settles a bit more and comes out of the hide. Thank you everyone who has given me advise or offered their support!!!

He has pretty colors on and around his head

Could you just pinch those pudgy cheeks or what?

He's about a year old. Is this full grown or will he get bigger?

First view of his new home sweet home. I will have to mist daily until I work out how to make a lid to keep the dirt from drying so fast.

This is kind of embarrasing, but hopefully he'll forgive me for taking and posting this next photo. Having never before seen the underside of a male uro, I was a bit shocked to see these things hanging out of his pores. My Leos have pores, but nothing sticks out of them. My Beardie also has pores, but again, nothing sticks out. Is this normal???

Well, those are the pics for now. It's going to be hard going to work tomorrow, but maybe it will be good for me not to be peeking in all day anyways

He's really very beautiful! Congratulations and happy birthday! I think I remember you saying he'd been at that store for a while, so maybe he'll adjust quickly to living with you. Ornates as a general rule are supposed to be pretty laid back - hopefully Scribbles will be no exception!

He looks fairly large in the photo, and they're supposed to max out at 10-14", so he probably won't grow too much more in length. I can't wait to see how his colors change as he matures!

Forgot to mention the waxy secretion is normal - heaviest in the spring.

I'm glad that's nothing to worry about. You are right, he was at the store almost a year. I don't believe he had UV. He had very good heat and food and did get vitamin and calcium supplements. I'm hoping that by giving him UV he might color up more, but I'm not too concerned. When they got him out the first time at ths store today he was really hard to handle for the first few minutes. Twisting and turning and opening his mouth. But he calmed down quickly and then was fine. He licks alot. It tickles. Luckily he has decided I don't taste good enough to consider my arms to be good for eating! I'll keep you guys posted on how he settles in. Thanks for looking at his pictures!

Scribbles settled in very well. He found his basking spot. It is a large smooth rock with a Ceramic Heater hanging over it so it' nice and warm on his belly and then the Heater warms his back while he lays on the warm rock. There are other rocks around that one and one is slightly higher. I wish I had gotten a picture, he was laying on the warm rock but had his head resting on the other rock like a pillow. Looked very comfy. After basking, he toured the enclosure and licked everything. He climbed on all his branches and did a small amount of glass dancing. My question is about something else that he kept doing. I can best describe it as a push up. He'd walk a few steps, lay down flat, then lift his front end only up high off the ground then back down, then he'd walk a bit more and repeat it. He did these "push ups" all over the tank. Was a very distinct motion, definitely deliberate. Does anyone know why he was doing that? Was he scent marking? Or posing for possible females? I'm so happy that he seems to be relaxing and seems to be doing good. Instead of sleeping in his hide, he fell asleep against the far corner on the cool side. My one Beardie sleeps like that too, up against the corner. Doesn't seem to be the most comfortable sleeping position. Do they sleep vertically in trees or something in the wild? Is it a good sign that he's sleeping out in the open (albeit in a corner) as opposed to in one of his hides? OK, I'll stop with the first day babble. I'm sure you've all 'been there, done that' and know where I'm coming from

it definitely sounds like he is settling in and being cute about it. i like it when i see my uros sleeping/basking in a circle, each using the others butt as a pillow, very cute!
well i know uros do push ups in mating, but since he lives alone, i doubt he was trying that. my male is still young so i have not seen him mark his territory but i know my other lizards do the nice butt-drag, where it looks like their back legs are paralyzed. uros have really good eye site so perhaps he saw another lizard and was telling him this is MY home, ha ha. i am glad he is doing well and i really like his name, considering how he looks

He is gorgeous! I wish I had a pet store near me that carried anything other than Mali's. I do have to say however that based on size he is a lot older than you think in my opinion unless he was captive born and they know when but that is unlikely, especially for a pet store. Congrats.

Yeah, he was captive born. They got him as a little hatchling last Spring. I didn't ask who they got him from. There was a sign on the enclosure to visit Deer Fern to learn now to care for them. But that doesn't mean he came from there. More likely a wholesaler. From what I read it's actually hard to get WC Ornates. I read that they used to go for under $100 each because they were all WC but then they changed the import rules making it harder to get them in, so now they are mostly CB which is what tripled/quadrupled the going price. But that's just something I read online, I don't know if it's true. Thanks for looking at the pictures!
