Already have a question

I looked through the past post but didn't seem to find it. My problem is that I'm sitting here going through different care sheets and a lot of them conflict on a few things. One says they need a diet of 75% meat and 25% veggeis, the other says 60% fruits and veggies and 40% meat. Which is it?

And also, most of them say canned cat or dog food. Never had a reptile that ate dog food so I'm just wondering if any long term keepers feed them that?

Thanks for any help.

There's only one care sheet worth reading: www.bluetongueskinks.et

I go for 50% greens/veggies, 40% meat, 10% fruit

It's not an exact science - the main point is greens/veggies should comprise most of the diet and fruit the least.

Many use low fat canned dog/cat food for the meat portion. I personally use it as a last resort and offer cooked whole meats (chicken breasts, ground turkey, shredded beef, silkworms, butterworms, waxworms, snails, etc). The important thing is variety and choosing the right foods. Check out that caresheet and that will help tons.

I actually found that link on one of the post down below after I posted that message last night (sorry). Didn't know there was an entire webpage dedicated to them.

Also, I have an extra 6' vision cage that I'm not using, could I put the skink in that to give him some room to roam? Or would that much space freak him out. He's not a baby, he's about half grown. Anyways, any opinions on the cage thing. I just figure I'll be able to give him 3-4 hiding spots, 2-3 water bowls, basking spot, etc... with a cage that big.

The bigger the better (just go at least the size of a 40 gallon)! You'll only need one water dish, but lots of hides and things to climb on would be great!

Awesome, I set him up in that 6' vision tonight. He's been checking it out all night. Also, is cypress mulch ok to use? I had some from and I've used it on other reptiles. Just wondering if it's ok?

Tigergenesis Apr 07, 2005 06:12 AM

Substrate is a matter of opinion, but some do use cypress mulch. A lot of people use aspen. There's a forum on that website that you should also check out.

Glad he seems to like the new cage.

I guess I'll just monitor him closely on the cypress. If I notice anything wrong I'll switch. So far after a lot of looking I haven't found anything that says DON'T use cypress, but I have read a lot about aspen. But time will tell.

MikeBurns01 Apr 10, 2005 11:57 AM

Cypress isnt as nice for them to burrow in and it hold humidity a little too well. I've found aspen is best and carefresh is 2nd best in my opinion.
