Columbian VS Surinam etc...

damian5000 Apr 06, 2005 02:52 AM

I've read that the Surinam, Peruvian Boas etc... Are more agressive than the Colombians. How true is this of captive breds? I've owned several columbians and they seem relatively calm to me.

I'm thinking of getting a true red tail, but don't want to get something my friends/kids/myself will have to be super careful around.

So from people who have owned both...... How do they compare as far as temparement goes?

Thanks!

it all depends on the snake... each snake has its own personality... if you are worred about a nippy snake i would recomend seeing the snake in person if possable... ya know... holding it and seeing if it has a nice temperment...
also in my experience the more you handle an agressive snake the more they tame down...

good luck

I have never had any problem with my suris being aggresive. I have also had columbians that just don't like to be handled. I really think that boas have to be evaluated on an individual basis. If you buy captive bred boas and you care for them properly you should have no problem.
I heard the same thing about true redtails before I got mine and yet the 3 I have are all sweethearts. I think that as more and more captive bred BCC come into the market the myth of them being more aggressive will fade away. Wild caughts are sometimes more aggressive for obvious reasons.

Talk about it with who ever you are going to buy from. Or better yet, go and see the snake and handle it, if possible. This will give you the best idea of the temperment of the individual snake.

There are a lot of CB suris that make good pets. Just make sure to by from a reputable breeder (tudehope, miller, etc). The majority of mine are tame, the only ones that are not are animals I purchased as adults.

I keep Colombians, Guyanas, Peruvian, Ecuadorian, Letician and Central American. My Letician and Guyanas were imported as babies and the Ecuadorian was imported as a yearling, none of them show any aggression other then a feeding response. As long as I make it clear to them that this is play time and not feeding time I see no difference in their temperment. Now I may just be lucky too?
Good luck with the BCC they are interesting animals.
Thanks
