New to pythons...

Zach Apr 06, 2005 09:08 AM

Hey everyone-

I am new to this forum, normally I'm around the garter snake or salamander forum but I've been wanting a python for a long time. I currently own a red sided garter snake, but I want something bigger, python or boa(but leaning python after seeing/handling my friends ball). What type of python, besides a ball python, is a good first python? I am looking for something that gets a little, maybe foot or two, bigger than a ball, is readily available and calm down nicely in captivity. Thanks for any suggestions

I had a Jungle Carpet Python which wasn't that bad of a snake, just that they can be nippy and they never stop moving around while holding them..

Well, ball pythons get to be about five feet long, so 2 feet bigger is about 7 feet. Okay , so you might give carpet pythons a try . They are usually snappy as babies , but they calm down after a while. Or if you are interested in boas still, you might try brazilian rainbow boas. They are usually very slender, not heavy like most boas , and seldom get longer than 7.5 feet. They have beautiful colors and iridescent scales , hence the name "rainbow" boas. The babies can be nippy but with frequent handling they are really gentle. If you want to see what they look like, go to google and type in "Epicrates cenchria cenchria" (i've found that those are the best photos). That's really all I can say. I hope that helps a little. Good luck finding what you're looking for!
