What kind of snake is this?

Dogbert0051 Apr 06, 2005 01:42 PM

My dog killed this snake this afternoon, I live in the panhandle of florida, closer to Alabama. I'm thinking possibly a ribbon snake. It's probably about 15 inches long, the girth of an average males middle finger.

On this picture you can see that it has a checkerboard pattern, it goes the entire length of it's back.

This is the belly - pure white.

Not a snake. That is a lizard. It is occasionally called a Glass Snake because the tail can break off and it regenerates. Note too that it has Eye lids and an ear hole. No snake has those.

Notice that the last inch of the tail is brown..that has been regenerated. It is actually uncommon to see an adult glass lizard that has not had part of a tail lost at some point in its life. The genus is Ophisaurus which translates to snake lizard.
