and what should a heat gun measure so that it is safe?? also what if i dont have a heat gun....

Put your hand on the basking surface and hold it there. If it's too hot for you, then it's likely going to burn your uro, too. If your air temp is proper (around 120F for basking, measured with a digital probe thermometer), but the basking surface is too hot, then try a different basking surface. For example: lighter colored stone doesn't get as hot to the touch as dark stone, but you can still get the proper basking air temps.

By using a good thermometer. Something like a digital indoor/outdoor thermometer or a temperature gun.
