WTF's diet

treefrogsrock345 Apr 06, 2005 02:47 PM

i am feeding my two WTF's 12 gut loaded and dusted crickets a day. I have heard that I should switch to something else every so often to add variety but i am having trouble choosing what else to feeed them. mealworms and superworms can chew through the frog's stomach and do some damage and my frogs are only 3" long so I can't feed them pinky mice yet. I don't know about worms yet. I think worms are too long. Do you ppl have any ideas?

Thanks, Marie

Meal and super worms do not "chew through the stomach" of healthy, living animals. But, as soon as I say this, I'm sure someone will say otherwise. If you think a superworm can survive in the stomach acids of a frog, just drop one into a glass of tapwater. They drown in seconds. My biggest problem with meal/super worms is their fragile nature: if I accidentally spray any water on them they tend to die off.

I've used meal and superworms as food for a variety of lizards, turtles and frogs for about 8 yrs. No problems. Just make sure the animal is warm and well hydrated and it will be able to digest its food properly. And be careful not to feed an overly large item to a small frog. This applies to crickets or any other food. My 3-3.5" frog has had no problems with standard superworms, mealworms, crickets and nightcrawlers.

I've fed my WTF the following: nightcrawlers, crickets, mealworms, superworms, waxworms, and pillbugs. Sometimes with the waxworms I have to feed them out by hand since a waxworm is fairly inactive. I dust the food items maybe once or twice a week.

Ditto; I've never had problems with meal worms.
what you feed can depend on weather you are trying to fatten up your frogs, maintain weight, or slim them down. I'd say wax and silk worms to fatten up, crix and night crawlers to maintain and mealies (less of them) to slim down.anywyas portion is inportant....
