How do you know when a hybrid is possible?

showofhands Apr 06, 2005 03:05 PM

I'm really interested in hybridization, but I'm lost when it comes to determining which hybrids are possible. I know corn snakes have been mated successfully to kingsnakes, ratsnakes and milksnakes, but does that mean it's possible with ALL kings, rats and milks (European varieties, for example)? I'd never expect one of my corns to get busy with my ball python or anything like that, but I'd like to have some way of knowing when I look for new acquisitions whether they'd be good candidates for unique hybridization projects.
I know this is probably a pretty elementary question, but I've searched this forum and haven't found a comprehensive answer. Therefore I'd like to offer a huge thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply.

Well really colubrid to colubrid, python to python etc... that is pretty simplistic, there is more too it. Now, american colubrids to asian or european? I dont know!!! But you can mix any corn, king, milk, bull, gopher or pine together. And I know balls and bloods can cross, but beyond that, can a ball mix with a burm? I dont think so, but I dont know. SOmeone with more knowlegde about the genus/species/family should probably answer this question, but since no one had I thought I'd help you out at least a little.

Hope that helps a little?
