camping in anza borego soon, questions of photographing collards...

herpsaremylife Apr 06, 2005 08:05 PM

i get the feeling my dads digital camera would never work on these guys, am i right? also, what flash speed would you need to get a pic of a collard in action, and whats the best time to go photograph them? no set date for the trip, but once my dad and his cronies(a.k.a camping buddies) get to talking about it, it usually happens within the month.

As the collared lizard is the fastest living thing on earth, I suggest that the "shutter" speed (not the flash speed) is set at least below 1/125 seconds.

Personnaly, I wouldnt photography a moving collared. I would rather get it on video.

Here's my personnal trick about shutter speed minimum.
Shutter speed = 1 / Lenses millimeters

Ex:
If you're using a wide angle (35mm) : 1 / 30 second
Regular lenses (50mm) : 1 / 60 second
Teleobjective lenses (125mm) : 1 / 125 second

Above settings are for STATIC objects !!
Double them when you are dealing moving objects ... 1/60(wide), 1/125(regular), 1/250(tele) ...

With low cost automatic "digital" apparel, you CANNOT set shutter speed, its resolved by the apparel itself with current lighting. However, there's a way to FORCE moving things to be more "static". Its called "sensibility", higher the ISO number is, less light required to get a clear picture. BUT, at 400 ISO the quality of the pic is worse than 50 ISO pic.

So, on a sunny day on San Diego desert and with those tips, your dads digital camera should be as good as Eve's one !!!

Hey man,
I think the park has vestigium....Those are some of the most unique (in my opinion) looking Collareds out there. Take lots of pics man. Keeps us busy and envious. =) I use a Canon AE-1 camera for most of my photography. I'm very much an amateur, but its like bowling. Its still fun even though you may not be great at first. heh. Talk to you soon.
