constantly re-feeding....

deviledapple Apr 06, 2005 09:50 PM

im just wondering if this is normal.... my burm needs to be constantly re-fed her food to get her to eat it. she will attack it, constrict it, hold it for a couple minutes, and drop it. i find myself re-animating it after this 3, 4, 5, 6, times every feeding to get her to actually eat it, she goes totally into feeding responce, nabbing everything that moves, but just... doesnt eat it.is this normal? is there a trick i should be using? i noticed the one time i fed her a fresh killed rat, she ate it irght away, could this b related? normally i feed frozen

Trick is to leave her alone. Many of my snakes do this but generally due to the fact that they will strike the prey, contrict it, then I catch their attention because of me moving around or watching them in front of their cage, almost as if they are so excited to get another rat they forgot that there's already one in there with him. One she strikes the prey and constricts it leave the room and come back in 20-30 minutes. Hope this helped.

evrytime i just leave theres a dead stinky rat in the morning. like, today for example, lol. last night she was doing something a lil extra weird... she was chewing it like she was trying to bring it into her mouth, like she had it by the hed, but she had it by its side, and gave up after about 5 minutes. i cant imagine shes just "Not hungry" shes always seemed thin to me, skin a little slidey, not as built as burms, even babies like her, tend to be.

Odd... Is the rat warmed up, not just to room temps, but to live mammal temps? That could help.
Also braining the f/t rat might be helpful. kinda icky, but from what you describe, if it's a successful stimulus, it might actually be more convenient than repeated offering.
Hope you get a solution. I'm grateful my little Sophia is so enthusiastic about food. Except for the time she mistook my unscented hand for a mouse...

i always warm them up, via a heat pad, i let all the feeders sit on it, flipping every so often, until they are quite warm to the touch. all of my other herps are quite happy with the temps of the rats/mice, i think she just knows how hard it is for me keep safetly reaching in to jiggle her rat for her! i worry so much about her weight, she looks so skinny to me, but does eat, just not as much as i think she should. about 2 out of three weeks she accepts the meal. no ribs or anything poking out, mebe im just over-worrying
