feeding rats

pezpunk Apr 06, 2005 10:59 PM

thought i'd post this here since i'm not getting a response in the dumeril forum. alright i've had my dumeril for about a year and half now and she eats wonderful on f/t mice. she's getting bigger now so for awhile (6 months) i've been trying to feed her rats. i have tried everything i can think of; rat first then mouse, mouse first rat, thawing them together, keeping mouse and rat together, leaving it in over night...just about everything and nothing has worked. i'm to the point where i might try live rats, though i really don't want to any advice on this?

you might try feeding her a live rat that still has its eyes closed at the stage they haven't started eat soid food yet so they are less like to try chew on your dum but still move enough thast they will atract her attion

Most snakes will take the rat if you dip the head in chicken broth.

Thaw a mouse and a rat togther in a ziploc bag. When they are completely thawed, take them both out and rub the mouse all over the rat to give it a more mousey smell. Feed the rat to the snake. Do this for 3 straight feedings, and then try feeding just the rat without rubbing the mouse all over it. By the 4th feeding your snake should be more accustomed to the smell of the rats and should take it with no problems. Good luck!
