R.I. came back with a vengance, what next????

sandro Apr 07, 2005 01:21 AM

I have a male gtp that got R.I. took him to the vet got amikacin, and he seemed better for a month, but it came back big time, Ive got 15 others and they are all fine. I'm worried if I hit him again with anti-biotics it will fry his kidneys and if I dont he's going to drown in his lung fluid. I've raised the temp to upper 90's and the humidity, what would you guys do, he's a very special looking gtp, should I try baytril at this point I dont care about scarring I just need his genetics! Thanks to all in advance

I've used baytril with success in a few Emeralds and had one that I'd used Amikacin on that I thought had cleared up like yours but it came back again. I used baytril on him and it did clear it up. Now I don't know if it had anything to do with it but he died suddenly over a year later and no cause could be found.
Now I've heard of a treatment that is said to work very well(I'm brain dead tonight lol) can't think of the term off hand but they use the drug in a mist IE so the snake has to breath it all the time. I believe the Vet who is a member of the Chondro Coalition uses it you might look him up on their site and ask him about it.

Talk to your vet and see what they think but if you don't do something you know how it will end. Hope he gets better for ya.

Take him to your vet. I actually know and use Scott Stahl the Vet that is with the Chondro Coalition. He is the man when it comes to fixing any Reptile problems. As far as baytril goes its strong and will leave scars if you dont have the right dose and if you do not get into the muscle. Over the years when I had wild caught animals I needed to use baytril several times on different animals. Scott worked out the amount to use and showed me how to inject it. I never had any scaring happen. I am pretty sure he will talk to your Vet over the phone for a fee I know he used too. Scott's a genius when it comes to reptiles and I would highly recommend telling your Vet to consult with him.
Here is his website.

The med regime that I use was in part recommended by Scott in addition to two other highly regarded Chondro breeders. A few questions, "how long did you have your chondro on the RI meds"?

I personally use two meds when treating RI's and I use them "together"...not simultaneously, but together during the same course. And this entire med regime takes place over the course on one month's time. I use Amakacin and "Fortaz" the latter has a very fast shelf life and requires to be made up and measured into syringes and then placed in the freezer for storage. Also, as you are well aware, because Amakacin can be demanding on the renal systems, I further inject sterile saline solutions into the chondro to fully assure that its kidneys do not become stressed each time I inject with Amakacin. I alternate between the Amakacin and the Fortaz until each is administered 10 individual times. In addition, the chondro is NOT fed during the entire course of the meds as this adds further stress to the kidneys.

Thanks for the replys I treated for three weeks as my vet recomended and I did use Fortaz & Amikacin with ringers lactate to prevent damage to the renal system. I read in G. M.s book to treat for a month but the vet said it would be over kill. Now I wish I over killed it! How is the steelhead fishing where you are Rich??

Yes, you should have went the "over kill" route. I begin my regime with a high "loading" dose with Amakacin and then follow that the next day with a "loading" dose of Fortaz. I then wait one day and begin my every other day routine for the month beginning with Amakacin. This gives me 10 total injections for each drug over the course of the month (10 10=20 total). I hope your chondro fairs well with the RI.

Regarding the steelie fishing....it is gearing up as the fish are just beginning to show. We had a rather late winter that pushed our spring back a bit. However, now that the water temps are beginning to rise (42F) the steelies are entering. In fact, I'm going steelie fishing this weekend!

i think that it would be vary helpfull to the herp world if someone that has had a snake with an RI took it in for examination if they still owned the animal at the time of the animals death...
to my knowledge we have never had any tests done on these animals that we treat with these antibiotics... it would be nice to know if we were causing damage...
if anyone knows of any tests being done by a medical team i would like to take a look..
