Help With Feeder Roach Bin.... Please Read

LindsayMarie Jul 10, 2003 06:12 AM

Yesterday when looking in the roach bin during feeding I noticed 2 small fuzzy looking worms again!! A few weeks back I had seen the same thing (2 worms) but they were half the size of the ones I saw this time. Each time, I took the worms out and squished them. This time the 2 worms were buried in the food dish (in the chicken mash). My questions are:
1. What is this fuzzy looking insect? Is it a larvae of some sort of grain insect?
2. Where is it coming from? I am thinking the egg laying mash, but maybe I am wrong?
3. Are they harmful to the roaches?
4. Should I be worried about these things infesting my roach bins?
I have had the roaches for awhile now, I dont know exactly how long but I am thinking almost 2 months or so. Anyways, in that time I have only seen 4 of these insects in the bin. But that doesnt mean there isnt more in the bin!! ARGH!

Anyways the best description I can give is they are anywhere from 1/16"-1/4" long, have a fuzzy appearance, and appear to be a greyish/brown to black in color.

I use pine shavings as substrate and feed ground up egg laying mash, tropical fish flakes and apples, oranges, carrots. For extra living space I use egg flats.

So where are they coming from???

Next time I will try and get a picture, but they are pretty fast and I dont want to chance losing it in the house, yucky. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

BTW the lobster roach bin is doing GREAT! I have tons and tons of babies. Pretty soon I am going to have to seperate the adults from the younger ones, as it is getting crowded! The 1000+ mixed sized colony has at least doubled, but looks more liked tripled their size in less then 2 months. Of course I have been using some as feeders for my dragons.

Thanks again, Lindsay

The description sounds like the larva of dermestid beetles. These beetles feed on the dead remains of animals; in this case, they are probably feeding on dead roaches or the moltings of the roaches. The best control would be to clean your roach colonies of any of the aforementioned debris.
