8 hour Hovabator temp spike need opinions

jcmonitor Apr 07, 2005 09:52 AM

My hovabator as been running for two weeks prior to deposition and holding steady at between 88.7-91.3 degrees. My eggs are 7 days old and have been holding an inner egg chamber temp of 89-91.

Well last night, and I have no idea why, the box spiked???? My min max temp only read 91.7 but when I temp gunned the eggs some were 90 , two were at 93!!!

I imediatly dropped the box temp this morning and went into work late to make sure it dropped enough. They are all back to 89.9-90.3 degrees.

I guess my concern is, will 93 degrees for, I guess seven hours, from 11 last night to 645 this morning, deform the embryos?

I keep reading over and over that optimal range is 88-91 and that over or under may not necessarily kill the eggs but it can cause deformaties. Is that only when it's constantly over or under? Am I over reacting? and the hovabator is only a year old with a replaced heat disc in it, but should I junk it what could make it spike like that?

Thanks for any opinions-

I had my incubator do pretty much the same thing. I am waiting for my eggs to hatch as we speak. They should be out within a week and I will know for sure if It had any effect on my eggs but so far everything looks good. My eggs temps ranged from 92.0 - 95.7, that is way higher than yours were. I will let you know what the out come of my eggs are, They are all still good though. Thanks David

Thank you!
I would really appreciate that. I hope your eggs are fine and it will only help me to relax if they are.

Keep me posted

I have good news so far....out of my 12 eggsI cut one at 49 days, and had one cut on its own at 50 days the the another one cut at 51 days so I decided to cut the rest. They have not exited the eggs yet, but they all seem to be OK with NO defects. And the good thing is I got 8 pastels out of 12 eggs, pretty good odds so far. Thanks to the ball python gods for blessing me with this outstanding clutch. I will post pictures when they all come out. Thanks David

Here is the daddy....Bel line...whoooo hooooo

Awesome man,
Thanks that makes me feel much better. I got the temp back to 89.9 and it hasn't fluctuated much at all now so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Can't wait to see picts.

Thanks,
JC

Mine is hooked up to a Ranco. Temp goes from 90-89.
Learned years ago not to trust the wafer thermostat.
Next batch of eggs goes to the Helix. More than 2 degrees flux not a good sign.

If the temperature only went to 93 I don't think you'll have any problem.

Your problem will be sleeping at night thinking it could happen again at any time and maybe even get hotter!!!

After losing 3 clutches to a dinky thermostat we swear by Helix controls.
