Who devised the dripper w/ needle and cotton...

trinacliff Jul 10, 2003 06:48 AM

through the pin-hole? There was even a picture posted...but I can't find the post anywhere.

I'm having a heck of a time with the pinhole-in-the-cup method...it's either way too fast, it will totally stop completely...or the water just puddles on the screen top of my enclosure. It's driving me crazy!

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? ARGH!
Thanks!!!
Kristen

I had the same problem with every do it yourself dripper i tried. I finally had a family member bring home some I.V. drip bags and they work great. I can fill and set drip an never worry. My cages are in rooms so i don't worry about how they look on the wall (the wife would but not me)..

weh hey, im famousss, btw it was me. lol.. heres a link to the post. My cham liked it much, and it goes through the mesh and doesnt make that puddle. Makes quite small droplets but it builds up if you put it facing a leaf. It drips about once every 7 seconds :D. Oh and i was called corn_snake_123 back then

I've used the pinhole/cup idea in the past before keepers tried using IVs, but found it worked best through larger hardware cloth mesh. So, once I had a really permanent spot to set the cup on the cage top I made an insert in the screen...either a hole for the drips to fall through or actually sewing a patch of larger mesh into an opening in the screen. But, if I decided later to move things around in the cage I had an odd mesh spot there. The chameleon drippers on the market work OK, but I had trouble with the valves leaking or clogging over time. They were also a bit fussy to regulate and the drip rate kept changing during the day as the pressure from the bottle changed with water level. I also tried making my own dripper using valves and tubing for fish air pumps. Again, leaks and erratic flow. Actually, the most reliable dripper for me was the IV setup. It is designed to be very reliable, smooth flowing and not leaky. I got the refillable bag type (for nasal tube feeding) and laid it flat on the cage top. When it got cranky I just replaced it.

I would like using an IV for a dripper but don't know where I could get one.

Hey Kristen,

Yes, it was Jamie and I see has already linked you to it. Considering the fact that our chams need substrate (and a lot of it!) I don't think you want anything that will constantly drip like the IV set up, but there may be a way to regulate it(?). For now I am doing the hand method of spritzing a couple times a day with the very fine mister (BEFORE I put the crix in! they'll drown in a single drop of water LOL!)
and then I use the hand syringe (no needle - used for giving cats oral meds) on to certain leaves twice a day. I rarely see them drink but yesterday was their 2 month anniversary with me and they're doing great - but you know that

I just depleted the type of syringe Jamie is using (ink refill) so I think I will give it a try.
