Walking Beardies

Samurai33 Apr 07, 2005 11:31 AM

We take our Beardies for a walk, but always hold them. We just moved to an neighborhood where there's a large open area, with a dirt path. One of our girls was dying to get down. Besides the obvious (needing a leash and watching for birds, etc) is there any health reasons why we shouldn't let them down on the dirt? I worry about parasites, but not sure if that's a concern there.

Thanks!

We use a leash--our female is so big (German Giant) that we have to use a ferret leash (same design as lizard leash).

It is always a good idea to 'scout' the area first--look for plants or insects that may make your beardie sick if they eat them...beardies will taste EVERYTHING! We also try to avoid any areas with small pebbles/rocks for the same reason.

If you are in an area with fireflies DO NOT walk your beardie while they are out. They are extremely poisonous --the beardie can die before he swallows!

We take ours out on sunny days if the temp is above 70. Both of our beardies LOVE going outside and get excited when they see the leashes come out!

Thanks! We have a mixed German Giant, she's not that big though, but she's got a belly! She's only 16.5". We've heard the entire clutch came out small. Do you a pic of yours?

Any ways, thanks for the tips. So I gather the dirt itself is safe.

Other than the concerns already mentioned, keep an eye out for people with dogs and cats. If not on their leash, a dog can run up and snatch a bearded dragon quite quickly. Deffinitely watch for th ese irresponsible dog/cat owners.

There is a chance a bearded dragon can pick up parasites from outside, everything from mites and ticks to internal worms. Though most internal parasites are very species specific, I do know of one green iquana contacting parasites from outside.
