Laying box question

IguanaFly Apr 07, 2005 02:14 PM

My 8 year old iguana is gravid and about ready to pop. She hasn't had a clutch in almost four years now, so I am kind of rusty. I thought she was done with the last 62 eggs she laid. I set up her laying box with the same substrate as the other times. Same box. Same everything. Every once in a while she will go in for a few minutes, dig and get out. She is doing the head shaking thing when I pick her up like she did before the last two clutches, but it is taking forever. I had the xrays done two weeks ago and the eggs were visible, but not the complete shape of them just yet. My question is, I guess, is can the box have anything to do with her not wanting or ready to lay them. She just doesn't seem interested in it at all as before she would go in all the time, dig and come out, but not this time. I know I am getting anxious, but it just seems to be taking longer than usual this time. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

Yes, the laying box can do alot if your iguana doesn't like it or finds it not suitable for laying. If she's about to pop I would change the amount of water your add to it. What substrate are you using?

I am using the bed a beast stuff that comes in the blocks and you mix it with water. She so did not like the sand/dirt mixture or the vermiculite I have tried in the past. As for the ready to pop, I guess I am jumping the gun. In the past few days she has started to slim down and I can start to see the eggs a little more now. She is active around the house and also lays for hours in front of the sliding glass door in the afternoon. I caught her yesterday digging in the box, so I guess that is a good sign. Thank you for your help. If there's anything I should be doing different, please let me know.

hehe, no problem. everyone that goes thru breeding/laying tends to jump the gun quite a lot. expect it more and more. If she's digging at the box this is a very good sign as she's takin at least a hint of liking to it. just give it some time, i think you'll do fine. GL
