the gas prices are climbing like every other day here ! It is NOW at $2.29 in Emporia and climbing. At some Wichita stations at $2.39. Oh and better get your non-residents license to looky if you are a non-resident. I'm told there a crack down headed. But what else is new ? LOL !

Where did you hear that there is a crack down this year? I doubt that it will be anything different then any other year. As far as I'm concerned all who come to Kansas to herp without buying a license can and should be prosecuted. Gas prices were $2.30 per gallon last time I checked here in Hays, Ks.

Hey Mike...I will be passing through Emporia on the way to Elk County next weekend...Wanna hook up for some herpin? LMAO!

You seriously think people should be prosecuted for looking at snakes without a license? Collecting, sure, but flipping a rock and looking at a snake and taking it's picture should cost $40? I should have to spend $120 to bring my wife and kid there to look at snakes? In Iowa, you can look at our snakes for free. Of course, we don't have much worth looking at....

the situation of determination of an agency or agents for that agency. While you don't " need " a permit to look and photograph , if you actually pick up a species for whatever reason and or actually flip a rock or log, you could be under speculation and or a reasonable speculation of collecting. In Texas ( as well as some other states ) it is well known to have your resident or non-resident permit for photographing species and particular at night on roadways. While it is not a criminal action, it can be construed as one by a over jealous park ranger ( if in some kind of park either Federal or state park ) and or a wildlife agent. They would , of course , have to see you actually pick something up ( in what i know ). Of course , also, you wouldn't want anything species wise on your person and or vehicle if you are without permit. If nothing else, it ( permit ) would keep you from going under ( might ) scrutinizing of a prolonged stop by such agencies. One night in Big Bend National Park i was stopped and searched for just photographing wildlife on roadway. I was informed that i COULD receive a citation for " undo " stress on wildlife for : A > stopping for a certain length of time that wasn't necessary, B > using a un-natural light on a subject for photographing and causing undo stress on that wildlife, C > a traffic violation ?, D > possible citation for having ANYTHING that was deemed as collecting material like jars, snake tongs, snake hooks, etc . While I know and others know that this would of NEVER of held up in court, I wasn't prepared to fight such citations nor would i want to. While any common permits wouldn't do one any good in that kind of situation, they WOULD do good any place else. So, in Kansas if you are just looking. no problem unless they cite you for " undo " stress of native wildlife by flipping that rock looking for ! LOL !

Last year it was $73.25 for an annual out-of-state hunting license. I know, because that is what it cost me when I purchased it on-line. I will be buying it again this year as we head back to Kansas shortly.

having to have a hunters safety class ? I had one of my friends from Alabama get hit by this last year when he was trying to buy a non-resident license for Kansas here. I told the person selling the license that i thought that was only for actual hunting with weapons or game animals. After me protesting that i didn't think this was the case, the retailer said okay but didn't want to get in trouble but went ahead and sold it to him. Of course I myself fall into that age group where I don't need a hunters safety class to buy any license anyplace. But i was just wondering if they are right ?

I took it in Junction City, KS around 1974-1975. I was born in 1959 so I missed the July 1957 deadline. Now Kansas will accept other State's Hunter Safety Courses, and I have taken one in Arizona back in 1991. Last year I was able to use my social security #. I'm getting ready to order my 2005 hunting license on-line here soon. Last year they said they were going to add a feature that would allow a person to look up their certification.

I went to the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks web site and punched in my last name and date of birth and got my Kansas Hunter Safety Course number from the 1970's. Pretty cool.

How do you find those snakes? You "hunt" for them. Same concept as hunting deer or any animal, you don't just have to get a license if you actually shoot the deer, you have to purchase the license just to look for them. Same concept with reptiles, even if you are only "shooting" them with a camera.

I'm shuddering to think what it is down in the west Texas area of Alpine and the Bend. I have heard rumors though. So far the analyst have kinda been wrong on their predictions of the downing price or leveling out of gas prices. There are a couple of sites that reports gas prices around the country and very occasionally some places south of Midland reports in. They are saying the high is $3.88 and average is $2.39 with expectations of increases along the way. Double OUCH !
