My corn snake isn't shedding good

zaloria Apr 07, 2005 04:11 PM

Is there something I can do to help my snake shed? His skin looks all splintered like. Is this going to harm him?

Do you mean he is shedding in bits? If the shed is not one or two peices it could be a humidity problem. If the humidity isn't overly dry then I would start to suspect a health issue like mites, or an upper respiratory infection.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

It sounds like the humidity is too low.
What kind of set up is your snake in?
Does it have a water dish large enough for it to lay in if it so desires?
If not you need to get it one. If you are using an aquarium with a screen top you may want to cover about half of the top. This is conjunction with a larger water bowl can help raise the humidity just enough.
You can also mist you snake daily when you see it cloud up or go into the "blue".

Ok, for now.....Take a wash cloth and soak it with warm water.
Let you snake crawl through your hand while holding the warm, wet wash cloth. This should help remove the pieces of skin.
If this doesn't work put it in a tupperware, or gladware container with damp paper towels and place that in a warm secure place over night.
good luck and provide as much information as possible to help us pinpoint the possible causes.

This is the way I have the cage set up. They have the wood chip like substrate with a large water bowl, a screen lid lighting and a bark tunnel. Is that ok. I am going to try the wash cloth idea tonight. Thanks so much for your input. If I knew how to post a pic I could do that I show you what he looks like (with the shedding issue that is). Thanks again
