Baby NOT EATING

ckeezer Apr 07, 2005 07:05 PM

Ok, I have had my RES for about 2 weeks and it looks healthy. But it has not eaten, from what I can tell, since I have had it. I am not sure of the age but it is about the size of a silver dollar. I am quessing a couple of months.
I have him in a 45L with some water hysinth and other plants that I was told that they could munch on. I have som ExoTerra pellets that it will not even think about touching. I have the tank about 3/4 of the way full of water. There is a Fluval 4 in under water filter, heater and a dock for it, I am getting a new one, the Zoo Med one that auto adjusts to the water level.
There are six Shibunkins about two dozen guppies and a dozen ghost shrimp in the tank. Is this to much, of any thing?

Why would it not be eating? Is it normal for the animal to be hesitant to eat after getting into a new tank? I got it from a friend who I beleive caught it wild, I am not sure but he was going to let it go in his yard. Anyways, HELP PLEASE..... What else can I do to get it to eat.

Sorry for the essay here.

Chuck

What is the temperature of the water? A baby should be eating daily. What have you tried giving it. I strongly recommend a parasite check at the vet.

This happens often. A few of my turtles didn't eat for weeks after I got them (hatchling RES)--

Take him/her/it out of the tank into a small tupperware container with warm water and put some blood worms in (they should have them at your local pet shop). The ones I use are frozen. If your turtle is real shy you should put it in and walk away for about 20 minutes, this will give him enough time to feel safe and comfortable. This worked for me, let me know what happens.

Oh and make sure the water is only deep enough that it can poke its head out and breathe!

I've got the same problem. My baby yb won't eat. It swims well, suns itself. I've got the temps up and some plants it can hide in. I've only yet to see it nibble on some food.

I've thought of the same idea as Skanndelas, or however that name's spelled. But it still didn't eat too well. I've even tried raw hamburger and cooked chicken.

We'll see. But how long should you wait until you get concerned?

The best way I have found to get baby RES to eat is to give them something ALIVE.... You could either get some Feeder Guppies from a pet store, or get some SMALL crickets, or even some very small 'red-worms'... the movement is what got my turtles. they love to actually chase things! Hope this helps...

He is starting to eat like a cow! Take a look at the pics, I would like to know if he is a YBS or a RES, I am guessing YBS. You can also see pics of the tank setup, which will be changing once I get my new lite and my Fluval 304 filter, cant wait. Anyone interested in a in the tank filter and a nice 24" Light let me know. I will give you a good price on them, and they are both less than three weeks old.
