My baby bearded dragon has eaten very little in the past week and hasn't eaten anything in the past two days. I'm getting really worried. I know accilmation takes time, but I'm afraid its doing too much harm. I've tried all the prey items, wax/meal/silk/crickets/all kinds of vegetation with no success. Today I was so worried I even went out and bought a vibrating dish. I was worried he couldnt "see" his food and thought it would help. Nope, still no response. ANY TIPS?!

P.S. He has been drinking a lot lately. So he is hydrated

Well I just dealt with the same problem....Princess my new Sundial Reptiles dragon, didn't want to eat...her hip bones are sticking out and so she is on the skinny side. She would eat a cricket here and there and a leaf or two, and so after a couple I gave her some Repta-Aid from Flukers. 3 bucks at petsmart. Anyhoo, its an herbivore emergency aid to provide energy and fluid support for malnourished and dehydrated reptiles (got that straight off the box LOL). I made it, and had the texture of rice cereal you'd give to a infant learning to eat, or the texture of applesauce....anyoo, I gave it to her and she really enjoyed sipping it off her nose, a whole 3 cc's. It seemed to jumpstart her appetite....well, it worked for me...I'd try it. Anyhoo, it'll get him vitamins and stuff if you syringe feed him (force it if you have to) but hopefully he'll lap it up like Princess did....

just out of curiousity, are you using a bedding or paper towels as substrate for the baby in question?? aslo, when animals (lizards, snakes, dogs, cats,..etc..) drink alot of water, there is usually something wrong inside and they know it. i had a beardie, proably wc, come in with liver damage and a few days before he died he started drinking and drinking water like i have never seen a beardie do...so keep a good eye on her and maybe get her to a vet. but you know what they say about mother nature...only the strong survive, maybe she just wasnt meant to make it, ya know?? sucks i know, but really not much you can do for baby reptiles with medical conditions.

IF she is drinking a lot, then it is probably stress related. have you talked to the breeder and any info on her prior set up and routine?

also, covering all sides but a small area of her tank sometimes helps them settle down. Think of it like a baby human, they get over stimulated and they get upset, don't eat well and get cranky.

I covered the sides of the aqarium with computer paper to prevent him from seeing his reflection or all the traffic. I'll try the repti-aid, I'll get some tomorrow when I return this stupid vibrating dish! LOL.

Thanks

Please let me know if it works....I'm curious to see if I'm on to something here...LOL
Oh by the way...this is princess...

jgamboa888 Apr 07, 2005 09:11 PM

Wow she is beautiful! Was this taken before or after she started eating cause she looks plump and healthy. I'm scared for my little guy, hes SO skinny!!

jamiesbeardie Apr 07, 2005 09:22 PM

After she's eaten....I guess she looks plump but look at my next pic of all my babies. Compare her tail base to theirs. She just is skinnier to me...but she is doing so much better....Thsnk!

jgamboa888 Apr 07, 2005 09:24 PM

The base on my bearded dragon is alot skinner than princesses! A first time owner shouldn't go through this! I hope everything works out.

go for the repta-aid. Can't believe Jamie only paid $3 for it! It is $10 here (NH).

When Luna (chameleon) is gravid she stays off her food for several weeks(!! drives me nuts!) and I use the R/A, matter of fact she is on it now. She loves it, too so it is easy to get her to take it. I do suggest following the weight/dosage chart that come in the box.

Good luck!

The RA was on clearance!!! LOL :P

lele Apr 08, 2005 03:42 PM

I just got back from petco and spent $9.99. Was yours on clearance b/c it had expired?? Even so, many product are quite fine long after their expire date. You got a great deal!

He gobbled down about 2 CC's and I'm gonig to start feeding him twice a day. I hope it will jump start his apetite like princess. We'll see, how long did it take princess to start feeding on insects again?

jamiesbeardie Apr 08, 2005 11:58 PM

Princess started eating slowly the same day. She took in 1-2 crix and a leaf or two, couple of days later, she's chompin' those crix down pretty fast. She likes the hunt. I can't wait for my silkies to get a bit bigger so I can feed her those too. So keep at it with him...I'm sure if you keep giving him the R/A his appetite will pick up....

jawz Apr 09, 2005 10:21 PM

Hey...i sorta got the same problem...would it be better if i buy the R/A insectivore version instead of herbivore for my dragon?

lele Apr 10, 2005 12:10 PM

hmmm...good question. I use the insectivore b/c I have a chameleon. But on the insert from that package they have beardies listed. Since they eat more insects when young I would go with that one. just my thoughts
