dezy79 Apr 07, 2005 11:17 PM

Hi,

My boa shed 2 days ago he still some skin on his one eye and it wont come off I tried rubbing it with a cloth gently and his eyes started bleeding I freaked and stopped. I have a shed spray it helps sometimes it seems like his poor eyes are always covered though. I check the temps alot of the light and the humidity he soaks alot.Any suggestions would be great.

If it doesn't seem to bother the snake, maybe he will work it off eventually or with the next shed. If it seems to bother it, I'd take him to a vet.

Well, generally, you can get the eye cap wet, let it sit a couple minutes and remove it. Sometimes you can put a piece of scotch tape on the eye and pull it back off, which will remove the eye cap. To result in bleeding sounds odd. Also, soaking a lot could be a sign of mites. Was the eye/surrounding area bleeding, or was it blood from mites you may have been smashing around the eye? Mites do like to hang out there! I would seriously monitor your humidity levels and do a thorough search for mites. You can look at your substrate(newspaper/paper towels reveal mites pretty quickly), you can look for mite "waste" on the snake, look to see them moving around(use a flashlight at night and that usually yields better results), run a white cloth or your hand down the snakes body and see if you pull some mites. Also, look in the water it's soaking in, you'll more than likely have some floaters. You could very well not have any mites, but I'd do some serious looking given the described situation. Just to be sure...you are speaking about a Dumerils boa correct? Keep us posted, take care!

Hi,Paul

His eye bled after I tried to remove the cap it bled right in the center of the cap I tried to gently pick it off with my nails after this he attempted many times to deficate on me so I let him be. I bought two types of shed medicine I spray on him and let him soak in the water too it seems to be drying up but the caps are on pretty good he gets extremely tick when I fool with his eyes and tries to deficate which means your making me mad! So I again stop and leave him alone for a few days. Yes its a dumeril's boa. As far as mite I dont know what they look like but have not seen any that I know of none in his water and we change it daily. What do they look like and how small are they? Can u see them with the naked eye? Whats used incase he ever does get mites? He did eat so he must beable to see.One eye isnt as bad as the other. His humidity is usually around 45-50 I dunno if thats good or not some say its fine. The inside temp is around 90 in day and 80 at night. Thanks for the info.
