Moss Mould??

foreverfrogs Apr 08, 2005 06:25 AM

Hi. I've had my horned frog tank set up for about approx 5 days now and today I noticed what looked like fine patches of white fury mould appearing in spots on the surface of the moss. I didn't think the moss would go mouldy so soon. Is this normal and more importantly can it harm my horned frog? I keep him in about 4" of moist moss at a temp of about 80deg. Many thanks in advance.

Hello,You should Clean the mold out . I think it can be harmfull to your frog .I use Eco-earth and bed-a-beast, both are made out of compressed coconut fibers. you do not want too use any cedar as a substrate. You will also not want too use, bark chips, gravel or sand, as horned frogs are very greedy eaters and will ingest pieces of the substrate and it is not common for it too kill them. The use of sphagnum moss is also a good choice. For the water you will not want it too be deep, these frogs do not swim well and will drown, you only want the water too be at a depth of about there elbows when they are sunken down, and not above there nostrils.
