Make sure you get the slate cut to the size you want it, at the store. You can lay a paper towel down in the poop corner, and just replace it when your leo poops. If you are feeding crix, the substrate will get dirtier much faster. So, it is really up to you, if it looks dirty then clean it. I would say clean it really good about once a month. You can just spot clean the whole cage about 2 times a week. But you have to change the water daily.

That calci-sand stuff isn't digestable like the package says...its dangerous like every other kind of sand. I would NOT use ANY sand.
Paper towels are cheap, practical, and safe but don't look as nice as other beddings. However, it doesn't look bad.
Slate and tiles are great...I use tiles just because we had some lying around. Make sure the slate is thin enough to allow enough heat through. You don't need to wash the slate since leos normally go to the bathroom in only one spot of their tank. In this spot, put a piece of paper towel down and all you will have to change is the paper towel. If you want to wash the slate before you put it in the tank (its a good idea to do so) I used scalding hot water with the slightest hint of ammonia or you could use bleach instead. Rinse the slate off really well.
