please help, strange water surface color

desertkingsnake Apr 08, 2005 11:28 AM

I have two water turtles, believed to be yellow-bellied sliders or mobile/florida cooters. They're about 9 years old and i bought them a Rena Filstar XP2 last November. It has worked great, until now when i've started to notice when you look at the surface of the water it has a blueish tint to it. When they move the water it swirls like when oil mixes with water on the ground on a rainy day but with just blue coloring. Also a little bit of brown algae has been building up in the corners on the end where the filtered water goes back into the tank. I'm not using any water conditioners or treatments, but in the filter i do have 2 small bags of ammo carb i had from my last filter. What is this and could it be harmful?

Do you feed your turtles in the tank they are in all the time? Or do you put them into a seperate tank to feed them?

I ask this because I notice a weird "oil" like film on the top of the water in the bowl I feed Koopa(my RES)(one of those tanks you would have hermit crabs in the...Large size of those). I have noticed after feeding him some of those turtle pellets that it leaves a oily like substance on the top of the water.

I am no expert, but this is a possibility I would imagine....

Hope someone else can help....

You are correct. That is generally caused by oils in the food. To the orginal poster: Have you changed their diet in anyway lately?

It is just oils from the turtle pellets. If you get a airstone or something to agitate the surface of the water it will go away. It isn't harmful.
