Is my woma gravid? Pic enclosed. Possibly slightly inverted??

rudedogsurfrat Apr 09, 2005 01:40 PM

Hello, this girl locked up alot around October. She hasn't eaten for months and the male doesn't care about her anymore. Ha ha. She seems a bit stout. She's not in the nest box but she seems slightly "inverted". What do you professionals think?

Thanks

Rudy

When my woma was gravid it was kind of hard to tell, but she did show some swelling in the lower half of her body like yours does.
How long has it been since she has shed?

Good luck
David

Based on what you have said, and the photo, its possible she is gravid, git your incubator ready just in case. Once she sheds start counting the days. See Mark Sewards hydroscopic incubation technique if you want a successful hatch.
Best of luck

I found her fully inverted in the nest box when I got home from work today. Good sign right?

I hope I don't screw this up.

Anyhow how do I find out about that incubation technique??

Thanks alot

Womas will invert at all times of the year, even males do it, but based on what i have seen, i would say your Woma is going to drop some eggs. I would say 10 days or so following her next shed. Now...its possible she is not gravid BUT usually the lack of interest on the males part coupled with her not eating and laying inverted points to a gravid snake, at least in my colony. Is she spending alot of time on the heat and then shuffling off to a cooler area, returning to bask again? She will invert more as the time nears, if she starts acting strange; rearranging her cage, piling substrate (my animals seem to make nests by scooping material with the forepart of their body into piles)around the nest box, pushing material OUT of the nestbox, and generally squirming around it means she is going to lay soon probably a day or so. Anyways, good luck! getting the eggs is half the battle!
Mark Sewards incubation technique can be found in his book on Gila monsters BTW.
Cheers

After refreshing my memory with my notes, I have found an average of 16 days in my animals from day of shed to day of deposition. Though this can vary due to temp. gradient provided during the development of the eggs after fertilization.
Good luck!

she shed 14 days ago and lays fully inverted in the nest box. I've had to lower the heat on the heat pad because she's moved all of the substrate away and lays with her back directly on the hottest point. She seems to have slight burns from doing this.

When you say "seems" do you mean there are burns or she is forcing herself to bask on the heat? Either way, insulate it better and do it quick your animals should NEVER be able to burn themselves voluntarily.
At this point I would say she is in the last stretch as far as dropping the eggs, it would be prudent to turn your heat source down to say 85degrees (you are using a thermostat?) so that when she lays (and you are not there)the eggs will not cook if dropped over/on the basking site. This is VERY important, too much heat is bad for Woma eggs, but any clutch would suffer if layed in the basking area. your nest site should be in a neutral zone between the cool and warm end of cage, that way the eggs will maintain an ambient cage temp which is fine until you can throw them in the incubator.
I hope this helps!
Good luck!
