bd's & cats

lele Apr 09, 2005 02:12 PM

I have 2 cats that occasionally come within view of my bd. He is in a hall so it is just when passing by, plus his tank is high and they are, of course, on the ground so his viewing is infrequent. I understand the whole predator/prey thing (I have other herps) but he does not seem terribly upset when he sees them - just looks. Do they become "accustomed" to having them around?

thx,
lele

I have dogs and when I have my beardies out in the living room for playtime my dogs are around so I'd assume that they get used to them since my beardies still run around even though the dogs are around. In fact my beardies have walked straight up to one of my dogs to check her out, she just sniffs at them and walks away. I wouldn't suggest that with all animals because I'd never let my beardies near my other dog but my one dog lets my parrot sit in her head and play with her ears so I know its safe. I took the time , large amounts of time, to teach my dogs that anything in my house is off limits and almost anything outside is fair game. I know you can't do that with cats but as I said I'd assume that they become accustom to the other animals in the house and are just a bit curious is all.

My friend has a pair of beardies that play with her cat. Both are under a year in age and are very spunky! The cat is a fat 20lb and is front declawed. He still paws at them, but the beardies just puff up and scare him away! She started off slowly introducing them to the cat and always supervises play time for them.Just be careful and good luck!

Wow, sounds risky, declawed or not! But I can also picture a cat get scared when the bd puffs up! lol! I will not worry a whole lot. Maybe seeing them now he will be accustomed to them later. My cats prefer to play with creatures long before they consider killing and eating. I put one of my (pet) hissing roaches ( about 3" long) on the floor to see what they would do and they had no idea WHAT to do! pretty funny! They are strictly indoor cats so maybe in the future we''ll all hang out watching TV in the evening

funny about your parrot!! My cats are strictly indoor cats so I can't do the indoor/outdoor thing, but they are well behaved (well, for cats ) and listen to me and are easily entertained.

thanks

You can sort of teach cats about what things are within the limits. I have two cats (one is useless...for anything... the other is a wonderful mouser). For the mouser cat I taught her that the animals IN the cages are off limits. She is to stay a distance away (or she gets her ear flicked---which she HATES). So now she will respond to a snap or her name. Cats can be trained. (although it does take some time.)

I also believe in letting them handle the heirachy (sp) themselves... so long as no one gets hurt. My OTHER cat (the above mentioned useless one)...sniffed my snake's nose once. They shocked each other (and each thought the other had done it) so she is done with the reptiles. hee hee.

oh, they know their boundries inside. No counters, no climbing up Luma's cage (cham), etc. But the beardie experience will be interesting later when I take him out.

love the snake/cat story!

They do. Er...at least my dragons are used to my dogs. I have a rottweiler and a Staffie, and I have the beardies tank beside a window where they can see out back. My dogs come tank level with the beardies, and they just stare at each other eye to eye. My dragons now don't even get fired up or puff up or anything. More curious really. Sometimes I put them on the window ledge in the sun and they'll just sit there watching the dogs play....I'll have to post a pic of that....it's real cute.

I'd suggest at least letting the cats sniff your beardie to see what their response would be. I let my german shorthaired pointer sniff mine at one time but after she started drooling I figured that it would be best to keep them away from her so now when I have them out she goes to her cage because she knows that the beardies are off limits. I'll be interested to see my parrots reaction when I get him back next month. At the moment he's living with my uncle who has snakes and other reptiles that my parrot is scared to death of just by the sight so I'll see what his reaction is when I get him home.

lele Apr 10, 2005 06:45 PM

so you sent your parrot off to be tortured? kidding If I were a parrot I think I would be afraid of snakes, too! Your beardie and parrot may become fast friends.

One of my cats saw the reflection of the bd in its tank form another room. She went out to investigate and didn;t knwo where to look! pretty funny! I just now held her up tot he tank to see him. I am sure that I will stories to tell in the coming months....

I didn't send my parrot to be tortured lol. I couldn't take him to Germany with us when we left and when I went back to get him the airlines had lied to me about taking him back with me and my uncle is the only other person that can handle him. I really hope that the beardies and my geckos won't scare him like the snakes and iguanas do.
