Growing mushrooms...

reptileink Apr 09, 2005 03:02 PM

Anyone know a good way to grow some mushrooms in a paludarium?? Should I go pick some wild ones? Do they transplant well? Is there a way to get them to grow naturally??? Just wondering.

depending on what type (if any) of animals you put in there, most wild mushrooms are toxic. i'd be very leary of getting any wild mushrooms for the tank.

mushrooms typically grow in the dark in piles of dung. mushrooms are actually farmed in dark rooms in cow manure. (ugh such a plesant thought, that mushroom swiss burger i had for lunch was pretty good, however...lol.)

They sell mushroom spores in seed packs in some garden stores. I ordered some over the internet . Lots of sites listed for them.
Mine grew easy. They like shade and moist. Light killed mine.
Initially my terrarium wasnt well lit. It was a 30 gallon long lit with only one 20 watt plant light floursecent bulb.
Than added three 30 watt plant flourescent bulbs and they died quickly. If you have a shaded area in your terarium they do well but light kills them.
They do look nice and natural.
