What Am I?? PICS

MohrSnakes Apr 09, 2005 05:28 PM

Hey,

I've had the female for 4 years and the male for 2. They have given me babies for the past 2 years. The female was from a guy who said it came from Bob Clark. The male came from Pro-Exotics. I bought the male because it looked similar to the female. I've recently tried to e-mail them about the male but they will NOT respond to my e-mails and I can not find the original paperwork.

I always thought bloods were cool and never really thought much more as my boas and corns took all my time and all I had was a pair of these. WELL....things are changing. I am getting more and more intrigued with bloods and looking to get into the albino lines and other rare blood stuff.

My questions to the people that know more than I do about bloods (which is not hard)

1) What kind are these?
2) Are they compatible with the albino lines out there?

Hey, they are a pair of Borneo Short Tail Pythons (P. Breitensteini). There is one albino breit currently in captivity in Europe, so hopefully in a few years we will be seeing them in the states. 99.999% of the albinos you see are Sumatran Red Blood Python (P. Brongersmai). Hope that helps.

Thanks.

I figured as much. I usually told people they were Borneo's but that I wasn't sure. I've only sold a handful of the babies. I actually have several that I've held back...they are just too cool.

On a side note, can you mix the species? I.e. breed a borneo to a red blood (or albino blood) and get viable offspring? Has it been done? Are the crosses cool to look at?

Again, thanks for all the info and I appreciate anymore....

Cheers,

You can cross them, but crosses aren't very popular with the blood crowd. I've seen a few that look OK but not tearly as nice as the pure specimens. The general trend seems to be to just keep them pure. I'd love to see some of the nice stuff you've produced with these guys, looks like a pretty good pair.

Nice Borneos!

The crosses are OK; I have one, and he's very pretty -- the problem is (in my opinion) that they are hard to tell apart from "pure" lines so there's a danger of getting "mutt bloods." I.E., some people have bloods that they can't ID that are likely hybrids. And that's never fun!

Congrats on successfully breeding your Borneos, though!
