Repti-Aid stuck on BD's mouth

jgamboa888 Apr 09, 2005 07:10 PM

My beardie eats kind of sloppy, and the reptiaid i have been giving him has caked all over his lips and front of part of his mouth. He goes crazy trying to rub it off and I can see it bothers him. I tried to spray him with warm water to try to melt it away but it hasn;t worked, I also tried warm water and a soft napkin. Any tips?

I am assuming Repti-aid is a multivitamin or calcium powder..if it's caking on his lips and mouth, I would cut back on the amount you are dusting your crickets with. Really only need about 1/4 teaspoon to coat a couple dozen crickets (if inch or more in size, less for smaller crickets) If it is some form of calcium based substrate, get rid of it. As for removing what is there, you could try giving the dragon a bath and with a used soft toothbrush, carefully brush around his mouth to get that stuff off.

R/A is a powder that is mixed with water and used as and "emergency" food fix, stimulate appetite, dehydration and/or nutritional deficiencies. My female cham lives on it when she is gravid b/c she will eat no feeders for a few weeks.

jgamboa888 - my suggestion would be two-fold: I would water it down so it is not as thick (and use a smaller syringe if you have one), the stuff can get downright goopy! Also, I use a rodent dripper bottle (one you can squeeze) and drip it on the bd's snout while the stuff is still wet. I use the dripper bottle because it produces a large drip but isn't as forceful as a mister. Improvise if you do not have one.

Something to keep in mind...if any of this is left on him overnight and you have free ranging crickets in there they may very well try and eat it off your bd's face. Even though I am using the cup feed some of them jump out and hide under the paper toweling that I may miss, so I leave a bit of food in the tank overnight for the crix to eat.

this is just my experience with the R/A, but I use it a lot with Luna, in fact she is one it right now. hope it helps!

Thanks, I'll try watering it down. Should I still feed him the R/A if he is eating a few crickets? I don't want him to be dependent on it and want him to eat more crickets! What do you think? I've been feeding it to him for the past 2 days.

No, once he begins on his own I would stop the RA. But as you can see, it is good to have on hand and certainly worth the $10
