I found a little toad...

Doug89 Apr 09, 2005 10:29 PM

Today while i was doing some outdoor yard work i found a little toad (about 3 1/2"-4" long) in my pool. My dad never closed the pool in the winter so it was only about 2/3's full (and very, very dirty!) the toad was sitting on the step that was nearly level with the water line but completely dry. I picked him up and took him over to a nice patch of grass and got some good shots with my camera (cant wait to see them developed). Then i put him back. I think he was jumping in the water to feed and then coming back out. I realized he was pretty much stuck in the pool. So i went back down and picked him up and braought him in. I set him up in a modified rubbermaid container that i used for my snake before i got the snake cage. I placed a dish of water in with him and a piece of cardboard propped up against the edge of the enclosure like a cage. I wanted to make sure he was alright by feeding him. I knew that they liked crickets but i didnt have any. I remember having a toad for about a week a few years ago. But what do they eat? I tried a little earthworm i went out and got but he didnt eat it. WHat can i go out and catch for him? Will they eat pillbugs, i always find them at night. Unfortunately it is dry and cold out tonight so i couldn't find any slugs. Also what type of substrate should be used? Thanks for taking the time to read this long article. Thanks for your help!

It might be a American Toad which I am very good at keeping. You should really buy some crickets for him or her it'll just be easier to feed and you don't have to worry about catching stuff for him. You should buy a 10 gallon tank for him it'll look better and be better put eco-earth or bed-a-beast as the substrate for it, it should be about 4 inches deep. Put some fake or real plants in there and a dish for him to go in, but isn't over it's eyes.

They will eat pillbugs and millipedes and earthworms if small enough, but most people with frogs and toads use crickets, the crickets shouldn't be bigger than between it's eyes or mough soemthing like that. They should be able to eat slugs I haven't ever used them before though. Ask more questions if ya need to.

I just took some photos of him and decided to let him go far away from where i found him (i didn't want him to get stuck in the pool again! But thanks for your help! I think it was a boy toad because it chirped when i touched his belly.

Untreated potting soil is good if you don't feel like spending $5 for a brick of that eco-earth stuff. Pill bugs should be fine for him to eat. LOL w/ your toad!
