When raising Iguanas Bannanas are not considered a healthy food because of a poor phosporus to calcium ratio .And can inhibit iguanas from metabolizing available calcium .Why is that different for cresteds? Or isnt it?

I do not know if it is the same with cresteds, but I do know that feeding a crested mashed banana is not bad for them, some seem to like it. However, banana should not be used as the primary food source. Live prey such as crickets, dusted with calcium every other time they are offered, along with Crested Gecko Diet should be used. This diet should make for a healthy gecko! -Joe

Ca
goes for any herp
It's not horrible, the banana's Calcium to Phosphorus is about 1:4 ish (if not a little less). Banana's are not all that bad if you compare them to a cricket, with a Ca
of about 1:12. And then you get to mealworms (i feel one of the worst feeders for any herp) with a Ca
of about 1:25.
Calcium to Phosphorus means for every gram of phosphorus ingested, another gram of calcium must be ingested for them to "cancel each other out". If this does not happed, the body will get the calcium from deposits in the bones, which can lead to calcium deficiencys and other issues.
Supplementing with some calcium will be beneficial if you feed anything with high phosphorus. Crested gEcko Diet should be the main food source, so you dont need to worry about feeding banana's a ton. When you do, it wouldnt hurt to add a small amount of calcium carbonet to the banana =)
