Crested Hierarchy

drkfantasy Apr 09, 2005 11:53 PM

Its common knowledge that two males can not be kept together.
General conversation here is that females can be and will get along.
My observations suggest that females might not battle till thier tails fall off.But there is most definatly a power struggle amoung females. With the winning female getting the best perch , and possibly even lording over the food to the point she grows faster than the submissive females. It even seems the more dominant the gecko the higher perch she chooses... This Hierachy seems to affect growth rates as well.I keep up to four juvies to a 18 x 18 x 36 tall with a reasonably high amount of perches and plants.

Has anyone else observed this and would more hiding places lessen this competition ?

I have not noticed any hierarchy at all with my females, although it seems plausible. I know this isn't much help, but 4 outta 5 aint bad

Only once. I have two sisters that are 54grams and 52grams. Now the bigger sister would beat up on her little sister. I mean they would have some pretty bad figths until I finally had to seperate them. Now I had them setup in a 30gal tall with one male. The bigger sister did not like the male breeding with the other one so she would go stop it by any means necessary. She bite the small female so bad she took a little piece of skin off her nose. But all my other 30, I have never seen a problem.

i havent seen it at all with the younger ones, but i did post a weird observation a couple weeks ago:

i have one setup where i keep my harly male and my biggest female, and i had just put in a new, but slightly smaller female. the male almost immediately began checking out the new female, and eventually tried to mate with her. just then, as he was trying to perfect his grip on her crest, the big female darted down to the pair, and began licking the male a lot. before i knew it, the male got off the new female and jumped onto the large female and did his thing. i found it very odd...
