Tegus outside...

Adrien Apr 10, 2005 07:22 AM

Hi all,
I'm french and I've two Argentine Black & White Tegus.
This summer, they'll come with me on the north-west cost of France , so I would like them to be outside when the weather is good.
But do you think a weak wind is dangerous for them (even if the temperature under the sun is 86-95°F) ? I think it's a resistant lezard but I'm not sure , and I don't want them to be sick because of wind...
Greetings,
Adrien

85 degrees Fahrenheit is plenty warm outside, even if a breeze is blowing--this spring my 2-year old, 46-inch Argentine in his outdoor enclosure would bask on days in the 50s and 60s, but still be warm to the touch because his dark color pattern absorbed so much heat.

A much bigger concern is how you will take your tegus outside. I couldn't tell from your post if you were constructing a permanent cage or pen (if so, it needs shady spots as well). If you're thinking about taking your Argentines out for a stroll, I would be very careful--even the most lethargic tegu indoors can turn into a raving maniac after a couple of minutes outside (this happened to me!), and can be _very_ fast and strong.

Good luck--

I agree. All lizards seem to get wilder outside. Also, if it's windy, and they have a hide area to go into, that helps. But the sun should be plenty to bask in. The wind shouldn't be a problem.
