I dont keep any hybrids because only have 2 snakes but hope to one day. I come here to look at the pics some of the snakes are incredible looking and or fascinating. I love this one.
I hope you post pics as an adult.

valfodr Apr 10, 2005 09:52 PM

awesome,just freakin awesome

any more hybrids planned for this year

arta Apr 12, 2005 04:00 PM

I also read that they did a cross between a centralian and a woma. I'd love to see pics of those.....

nerd_inc Apr 12, 2005 05:30 PM

Not us...if someone else has managed an Aspidites X Morelia cross, we'd love to compare notes!

I got that info from the morelia forum here on KS. Either way, your cross is bad a**. I work with womas myself and was not into hybrids until I saw your pics. Now I can't stop thinking of all the different combos.......would you be willing to share some of your "notes" on your cross??

bluerosy Apr 12, 2005 10:26 PM

That is the most impressive hybrid to come along in a while.

cudos!

sssnakehunter Apr 13, 2005 06:33 AM

Why??

There is a reason that this cross has never been done before. Why discrace the woma. It's like putting a VW bug motor in a Porsche 911.

No Aspidites fan will be interested in this, and you might be able to sell these to Carpet people, but they will never be worth what a pure Woma would sell for.

I hope that you used a male woma for this project, and didn't let a fertile female Woma go to waste.

First of all, which one is the Porsche and which one ifs the VW? lol

And your second comment is an odd one. Are you saying that Aspidites fan are somehow better than a Carpet fan? You sound as if you are saying that the wool can be pulled over the eyes of a Carpet enthusiast but those extra sharp Aspidites keepers just don't fall for any tricks. Or do Carpet Fans just have lower standards than those holier than thou Aspidites fans?

I'll leave with another question.....if you don't like hybrids, why did you come to the hybrid forum and post?

No....Womas are not more important than Carpets, only that they hold a more "exotic" spot in the python world, and not nearly as common as Carpets, or as widely bred in captivity.

The person who would shell out big bucks $$ for nice Womas would not be interested in this cross, BUT someone into interesting Carpets, or Carpet Hybrids would most likely be the person who would buy one of these.

PS, I have 20 Carpets/Crosses/hybrids in my collection, and 0 (zero)Womas.

Looks like you answered your own question? Or maybe you just wanted to voice that womas are better than carpets because they cost more.

The heading to this forum is, "Hybrid Discussion" not the only prohybrid people are right, so no other opinions matter forum.

and here is the statement under the heading.
quote; "Welcome to the Hybrid Forum. Here you may post messages or questions pertaining to all aspects and issues regarding the keeping, breeding and health of Hybrid species of herps."

I see "ALL aspects regarding, keeping, breeding".........."
hmmmmmmmm.

Yasser Apr 21, 2005 03:02 PM

Ouch! Ya got me!
But regardless of what the guidleines re for this forum, I have always felt that this forum was created as a respite for those who are into hybrids. It is a place where pro hybrid folks can feel welcome to post there hybrids without being ridiculed for it as it most often occurs on the other snake forums offered here on Kingsnake. But your comment reminded me of the reality of things.
Whatever the case, it looks like the other questions I asked of Sssnakehunter will not be answered. I can't say I didn't try!

I use to hang out here more in the early days, and I think it was originally formed because of the fact that a lot of the other forums threads did turn into debates. This gave a dedicated forum for that. I guess by it's nature, it has evolved into more of a pro hybrid forum, but I think it is not meant to at the exclusion of any "debates" or differing opinions. JMHO

arta Apr 13, 2005 10:02 AM

I am a huge Aspidites fan and I find this hybrid fascinating. Now I am not saying that I am going to run out and buy some, but it is neat. I don't think that anyone would do this cross for monetary gain, it seems more so for s**ts and giggles. For hybrid folks, what more of a challenge is there than two different species. I must also add that I am not into doing hybrids myself, but this one is interesting looking.

As for the vw/Porsche comment, a stock motor in a Porsche, no point. I have a'67 bug with a larger than stock VW motor and I cover the 1/4 mile faster than most sport cars...11.00 flat naturally aspirated....now looking at turbo systems....hold on tight!

sssnakehunter Apr 15, 2005 07:09 PM

I would like to talk to you about your Womas....and your bug How can I contact you?

SSSnakehunter?

the_bean Apr 13, 2005 10:42 PM

there is a reason that this cross has never been done before? A hybrid is a hybrid and this is a much more impressive hybrid whereas most of the carpet crosses are all the same genus making them alot more likely to breed together. Most people I have talked to about the Morelia crosses have stated that they are very simple to breed. There is a guy in Maryland who I spoke w/ a few years back and he told me that the zoo he worked at did a Grreen tree python X Carpet on accident and that gave him the idea to repeat the cross which according to him was as simple as breeding Carpet pythons themselves. I would say that N.E.R.D. has done a much more amazing task in getting these two genuses to breed....HATS OFF TO YOU! I can't wait to see what they look like as they grow.

nerd_inc Apr 14, 2005 02:29 PM

Thank you for dictating to the rest of the world who will & won't be interested in these snakes. For your info, we've had an overwhelmingly positive response from folks who keep Morelia, Aspidites, both & neither!

We'll determine what they're worth if we even decide to part with them in the first place, so you can unclench now.

Don't you worry your pretty little head over something that isn't even in your control.

Have a lovely afternoon!

>>Our first Irian Jaya Carpet X Woma crosses are hatching now!!!!

I am not a great fan of hybrids, but there are some nice ones out there. And these certainly are interesting! I wonder what they will look like when older. Hopefully you'll post some pics from time to time. I have my doubts as to whether these will be fertile, but it will be interesting to see if I am right. Although I would expect a female carpet mated to a male woma the neonates do look rather large for a carpet size eggs. So, did you use a female woma?

Female carpet.

"I have my doubts as to whether these will be fertile"

Why do you feel this way?
I cannot think of any hybrid snakes that have proven to be infertile. NERD even proved that a Carpet X Macklots was fertile by breeding it to a Diamond Python. This infertility concept seems to stem from what we have learned about crosses in mammals. So far it has been otherwise in lower vertebrates. But hey, they just got a baby from a female False Killer whale X Bottlenose Dolphin that bred to another male bottlenose dolphin. So even that theory in mammals can now be questioned. This cross was done both times at a zoo in Hawaii I believe.

I remember years back people would discuss hybrids in reptiles and just write it off as impossible. Now I see them in numbers. The Wholphin was probably thought to be impossible but there they are now. I am hoping many Python hybrids prove to be reproduceable with consistency but even if only the first generations are healthy they will still make cool pets, and that's what snakes are supposed to be anyway....pets. By the way Yasser, your IJs are some of the nicest I have ever seen Tom Stevens

First of all it is difficult to prove that they are infertile. You never know what combination will or will nor work. Having said that, I don't know of anyone who bred a amazon x emerald tree boa hybrid to anything, same for blood x royal. Has anyone bredd carpondros to anything? etc. I'm not really into hybrids so I am not current on what has been done.
Anyway, while Liasis and Morelia are a different genus, they are certainly far more closely related to each other than to Aspidites. In fact Aspidites are a really different group, seen as the most ancient python group, no heat pits and other things. The more removed, the smaller the chance of a hybrid and certainly a fertile hybrid. To be fertile the hybrid needs to be able to produce a whole complement of chromosomes to combine with the chromosomes of the snake it is mated to. And the more dissimilar the chromosomes of the parents of the hybrid are, the less chance there is of that.
All the fertile crosses I know of are realtively closely related. But maybe you have examples of really unrelated species?

Wingfinger Jun 21, 2005 06:54 PM

Poor little thing, while it looks attractive in its own way I'm completely against hybrids so excuse me if I don't offer my congradulations but instead gain a low opinion of whoever came up with the idea.

nerd_inc Jun 22, 2005 06:41 PM

Feel better now that you've gotten that out of your system?

Have a good one.
